Thinking of buying a used Mitsubishi Outlander?
The style of the car
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a rugged SUV that looks more like a traditional off-roader than many of its rivals. Its bulky shape gives you extra interior space, while the high ride height allows decent off-road ability and a good view of the world around you. Functional and tough, the Mitsubishi has a refreshing no nonsense appeal. The plug-in hybrid version is extremely economical to run.
How it drives
Easy controls, light steering, a high driving position and a reversing camera as standard make the Mitsubishi easy to drive and park. The PHEV can run in near silence when it’s in electric mode. All versions deliver reasonable performance and feature four-wheel drive as standard. The Outlander is also a useful tow car, especially the diesel versions.
Looking for a plug in hybrid? Here are our favourites.
The interior
The five-door Mitsubishi is more compact on the outside than rivals such as the Skoda Kodiaq, yet it still features a spacious interior. The PHEV models have five seats while the diesel and petrol cars come with seven. There’s plenty of boot space and all versions get loads of equipment. The top spec Exceed benefits from leather trimmed and heated seats.
Running costs and reliability
The Outlander offers great value as a used buy. The PHEV attracts zero road tax and, if you can plug it in to charge every day, fuel economy will be more than 100 mpg. The diesels are more cost effective over high mileages. Regardless of model, you can expect excellent reliability from the tough Mitsubishi, and servicing shouldn’t cost too much. The Outlander is also very safe and received five stars in the Euro NCAP test.
How it compares with similar cars
The Mitsubishi Outlander is about the same size as a Nissan X-Trail or a Skoda Kodiaq. Available as a five- or seven-seater, and with petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid engines, the Outlander is a popular car in the UK due to its low running costs and large interior. It isn’t a luxurious car, but its no-nonsense ruggedness has lots of appeal. The Outlander has won awards from My Next Green Car and Diesel Car magazines.
Mitsubishi Outlander common questions
Why should I buy a Mitsubishi Outlander?
As a rugged, sensible and great value SUV the Outlander takes a lot of beating. The plug-in PHEV offers very low running costs with its eco-friendly electric mode. All models benefit from confidence-inspiring four-wheel drive.
Is the Mitsubishi Outlander reliable?
The petrol, diesel or PHEV Outlanders are durable and rarely let their owners down, with many praising their cars’ durability in satisfaction surveys. Mitsubishi has a good record for reliability.
Is the Mitsubishi Outlander expensive to run?
The PHEV version of the Outlander costs nothing to tax and, if you do lots of shorter journeys, will cost no more than a pound or two for a full recharge. The petrol and diesel models are reasonably frugal too.
Is the Mitsubishi Outlander practical?
The Outlander has a roomy interior and a large boot, making it perfect for families with lots of kit or anyone who owns a big dog. Standard four-wheel drive allows the Mitsubishi to keep going in the trickiest weather conditions, and even off-road.
How does the Mitsubishi Outlander compare with rivals?
The Mitsubishi is robustly built and better equipped than its rivals, with items such as leather seats and touchscreen sat-nav featuring on most versions. The diesel and petrol versions get seven seats and no rival currently has the Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid capability.
