Thinking of getting an MG ZS?

The style of the car

The ZS is a compact SUV that’s slightly shorter than rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai but larger than city SUVs such as the Seat Arona. You can tell the pure-electric ZS EV apart from its petrol-powered versions by its different wheels and front grille (which incorporates its battery charging port). The interior is simple, solid and easy to use.

How it drives

The ZS has a high seating position that gives you and your passengers a great view out. Parking sensors are fitted as standard for easier manoeuvring and the top-spec Exclusive model has a reversing camera, as well. The ZS EV feels nippy around town and comfortable at higher speeds. The petrol engines give perfectly adequate acceleration. The more powerful 1.0-litre turbo option, which has an automatic gearbox, is better suited to long journeys.

The interior

The ZS is a compact SUV with five doors and five seats. It’s about the same size as the Dacia Duster or Peugeot 2008. It’s one of the most spacious cars of its type, with ample room for you and your passengers, even if they’re tall. Three children can sit side-by-side across the back seat and there are two sets of Isofix mounts. The boot has enough space for a few large suitcases. The back seats fold down and the level of the boot floor adjusts for more space. The seats are comfy, the dashboard is easy to use and the whole interior feels solid. All ZS models have air con, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity.

Running costs

According to official figures, the ZS EV has a range of 163 miles on a fully charged battery, though it can go farther if mostly driven in town. Plug in at home in the evening and the battery will be fully charged by morning. It costs nothing to tax. Petrol models give fuel economy of 45-50mpg, according to official figures, and road tax costs are reasonable. Insurance costs are low for all models. Safety experts Euro NCAP gave the ZS EV a full five-star rating.

How it compares with similar cars

Other compact SUVs include the Ford EcoSport and Vauxhall Crossland, while the ZS EV can be compared to other electric cars like the Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf. Some ZS rivals feel better to drive but its spacious interior and very strong value are appealing.
