Thinking of getting a Volkswagen Tiguan?

The style of the car

The Tiguan is a mid-size SUV that sits higher off the ground than a regular hatchback. That means you get a better view out and it’s easier to climb in and out of the seats. In typical Volkswagen fashion, it looks strong and solid rather than flashy as some SUVs do. It’s no off-roader like a Land Rover, but it’ll suit adventurous families or anyone who needs a car bigger than a regular hatchback. The styling was updated in 2020 with a few subtle tweaks to the front grille and lights.

How it drives

The Tiguan has an upmarket, premium feel. It’s a versatile car that’s as comfortable to drive on the motorway as it is on city streets. It’s available with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, and manual or automatic gearboxes. Some models have four-wheel drive. All the engines give good performance – the most powerful models are surprisingly rapid and great for towing.

The interior

The Tiguan is a mid-size, five-door SUV with five seats. It’s about the same size as the Ford Kuga or Peugeot 3008. It has a spacious, practical interior, with ample room for a family of five. Even tall adults will be comfortable in the back seats. The boot can hold a couple of week’s worth of holiday luggage and the back seats slide forwards or fold down to create more space if required. The interior’s a nice place to spend time and has a high-quality feel and all models have air con, cruise control and smartphone connectivity. Cars built from 2020 have more-generous equipment. If you need seven seats, take a look at the Tiguan Allspace – a longer version that has an extra pair of child-size seats that fold out of the boot floor.

Running costs

The Tiguan is available with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.5 TSi is the most efficient petrol engine, giving average fuel economy of around 50mpg, according to official figures. Diesels give 50-60mpg. Road tax costs are comparatively low and insurance should be inexpensive. Safety organisation Euro NCAP awarded the Tiguan a maximum five-star safety rating.

How it compares with similar cars

There are many rivals to the Tiguan, including the Mazda CX-5, Skoda Karoq, Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai. The Tiguan scores highly for its practicality and interior quality, and the latest models are particularly well equipped.
