Thinking of getting a Ford Fiesta?

The style of the car

The Ford Fiesta is a compact hatchback (or ‘supermini’) that’s about the same size as rivals such as the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo. It’s available as either a three-door or five-door model. There’s a version to suit everyone, including high-spec Titanium and sporty ST-Line models, as well as the ST hot hatch. The latest Fiesta (on sale new since 2017) is also available as an ‘Active’ model that has extra ground clearance and additional SUV-style exterior trim.

How it drives

The Fiesta is one of the most enjoyable small cars to drive, with a sense of balance and agility that gives you real confidence behind the wheel. It’s comfortable, too, with a smooth ride and an interior that’s quiet at speed. ST versions are very sporty, with extra power and stiffer suspension that makes them responsive and fun. Petrol and diesel engines are available across the range. Most give you nippy acceleration although the least powerful ones take a while to get you up to speed.

The interior

The Fiesta is a compact car, yet it’s practical enough for most people’s needs. There’s a lot of space in the front seats and two adults can sit in reasonable comfort in the back. It’s easier to get in and out of five-door versions than three-door versions. Boot space is about average for this type of car so you can fit in a few bags of shopping and a couple of weekend bags but not much more. Both the latest and previous models give you a great driving position and supportive seats, as well as a dashboard that’s easy to use. Lots of high-tech features are available for the Fiesta, including voice control, a heated windscreen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Running costs and reliability

Some versions of the Fiesta cost more than you might expect but running costs for most versions are very low. All of the engines give you excellent mpg and insurance costs should be inexpensive for all but the ST, which attracts higher premiums due to its performance. Ford ranks above average in the latest J.D. Power UK Vehicle Dependability Study.

How it compares with similar cars

The current Ford Fiesta is the smallest model in the Ford range. It’s smaller than the  Ford Focus and is about the same size as the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo.
