Thinking of getting a Citroen C4?
Why buy the Citroen C4?
The latest Citroen C4 is a mid-size SUV-like hatchback with standout looks and lots of equipment included as standard, all at a very reasonable price. We’re looking here at the latest version of the C4, sold new since 2020.
This version of the C4 sits higher than the previous model, for a more commanding driving position, and it has a design that blends an SUV character with a sleek, coupe-style roofline. Its major selling points are its looks, its excellent value and a very comfortable ride. The C4 comes with a choice of petrol and diesel engines that balance efficiency and performance well. There’s also an all-electric version, called the e-C4.
Citroen C4 range and updates
The current version of the Citroen C4 was introduced in 2020. There have been a range of trim levels since then, but as of early 2024, the trim line-up in order of price and equipment is the entry-level You! (Citroen’s exclamation mark, not ours), the petrol-only Plus and the top-spec Max. The electric e-C4 is also available in a top-spec e-Series trim.
Earlier models came in Sense, Sense Plus, Shine and Shine Plus trims, which have been discontinued but were broadly similar to the current trim levels.
Citroen C4 tech and features
Like most modern Citroen models, the Citroen C4 doesn’t have many traditional switches inside. Instead, most functions are controlled through a large (10-inch) infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard and there’s a digital instrument panel in place of traditional dials. The higher-spec models have an excellent colour head-up display, which projects driving information onto the windscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto let you mirror your phone on the car’s screen.
Most of the materials and surfaces inside have a good-quality feel. The front seats are unusually soft and cushy – if comfort is a top priority, this is definitely a car to consider.
Citroen C4 running costs and value
Fuel economy for the Citroen C4 range is pretty good. The popular PureTech 1.2-litre petrol engine, with 128bhp, should give you close to 50mpg. If you don’t mind having a bit less power, the 108bhp version promises more than 60mpg, according to official figures. The 1.5-litre diesel model, which has 128bhp, should also get north of 60mpg. The all-electric e-C4 could cost you far less to run in electricity than you’d pay in fuel (if you have a home charger), but it will be more expensive to buy.
Servicing, maintenance and insurance should all be very reasonable. New Citroen cars tend to depreciate quite heavily, but it means you can pick up a C4 for an attractive price compared with some rivals.
Citroen C4 vs rivals
The Citroen C4’s coupe-SUV-hatchback styling means that you could consider it a rival for a wide range of cars. The closest in shape and size are cars such as the Kia Xceed, Mercedes-Benz CLA and Volkswagen Taigo, while more conventional SUV rivals include the Ford Puma and Nissan Qashqai. Premium options include the Audi Q3 Sportback and the BMW X2. Among these the C4 stands out for its distinctive design, low ownership costs and focus on comfort.
Used Citroen C4 cars FAQs
How practical is the Citroen C4?
There’s lots of storage space around the Citroen C4’s cabin – 16 different compartments, if you’re counting, including cubby holes between the front seats and space in the centre console.
Boot space is similar to hatchback cars of this size, but small compared with rival SUVs. With a capacity of 380 litres it’s around the same as the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, but it's dwarfed by the Skoda Karoq (521 litres) and Peugeot 3008 (520 litres). Passenger space in the back of the Citroen is very decent, with good headroom and legroom for two adults.
How does the Citroen C4 compare with other Citroen models?
The C4 sits in the middle of the Citroen range. It’s larger than the Ami city car, C3 hatchback and C3 Aircross but smaller than the C5 range, which includes the C5 X and C5 Aircross.
How safe is the Citroen C4?
The latest Citroen C4 was tested by independent safety organisation Euro NCAP in 2021 and scored four stars out of five. That means it performed well in the tests, but not as well as five-star rivals.
The C4 is fitted with some of the latest advanced driver-assistance features as standard, including automatic emergency braking, a driver-attention alert system and lane-keeping assist.
Are there any hybrid or electric versions of the Citroen C4?
There are no full-hybrid Citroen C4s but there is a pure-electric version, called the Citroen e-C4. It gives you a maximum range of up to 221 miles with a fully charged battery, according to official figures.
