Thinking of getting a Volkswagen Golf GTD?

What is the Volkswagen Golf GTD?

The Volkswagen Golf GTD is a high-performance version of the Volkswagen Golf, which is VW’s mid-size hatchback. The GTD badge was first introduced in 1982 as a diesel version of the Golf GTI, and has proved popular ever since. The latest version has been around since 2020. The GTD follows a similar recipe to the GTI – take the standard Golf but make it faster and more fun to drive. You just have to fuel it with diesel rather than petrol. Incidentally, GTD stands for Gran Turismo Diesel.

What is the Volkswagen Golf?

The Volkswagen Golf is a mid-size hatchback and estate that has been on sale in the UK since the 1970s – it’s now in its eighth generation. The Volkswagen Golf is a rival for cars such as the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, but it’s also an alternative to more premium cars such as the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3.

Where does the Volkswagen Golf GTD sit in the range?

As a performance-focused model, the GTD sits near the top of the Golf range. It’s positioned as more exciting to drive than regular Golfs and it comes with a lot of features included as standard. However, there are more-expensive and more-powerful versions within the high-performance Golf R range.

How is the Volkswagen Golf GTD different from the rest of the Golf range?

In making the Golf GTD, Volkswagen has essentially taken a high-end regular Golf and made it more exciting. Visually, it has different bumpers and other exterior elements to give it a sportier look, as well as special alloy wheel designs, red brake calipers and an illuminated grille at the front. The suspension has been upgraded to make it more fun to drive and some models have adaptive suspension that you can soften or stiffen, depending on whether you want excitement, comfort or something in the middle.

Only an automatic gearbox is available, with no manual option, and it’s well-equipped with features like LED headlights, ambient interior lighting with 30 colour options that you can change whenever you want and a digital driver’s display instead of traditional dials.
