The Ignis is surprisingly spacious inside, with space for four adults to sit in reasonable comfort. The boot is big enough for a family’s weekly food shopping and the back seats fold down for more space. A very useful feature is back seats that can slide forwards and backwards so you can create more back seat legroom or boot space as you need it. It also has two sets of Isofix mounts.

Why buy the Suzuki Ignis?
The Suzuki Ignis is the smallest SUV (or crossover) sold new in the UK. Its quirky styling may have a lot of appeal, but there’s more to it than just its looks. There’s a lot of space packed into it, so it’s practical for such a small car.The interior feels hard-wearing and is well equipped, too.
Suzuki Ignis range and updates
The latest Suzuki Ignis has been on sale new since 2017. It’s only available as a five-door SUV. An update in 2020 included a new front grille and bumpers, so you can easily tell the difference between the two versions.
All Ignis models have a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which Suzuki calls ‘Dualjet’. Some models also have a mild-hybrid (MHEV) system, which is an extra electrical system that improves fuel economy and carbon emissions. You spot these models by the ‘SHVS’ badge on the boot lid. Manual and automatic gearboxes are available, and there’s a four-wheel drive version labelled ‘AllGrip’ .
There are three trim-levels to choose from – SZ3, SZ-T and SZ5. They all come well equipped, with features you might not expect to find in such a small car.
Suzuki Ignis tech and features
All Ignis models have air con, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio and electric front windows. On top of that, the mid-level SZ-T model gets a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, and rear parking sensors. The top-spec SZ5 model gets sat nav and cruise control, as well.
Suzuki Ignis running costs and value
Like any other city car, the Ignis costs relatively little to run. According to official figures, it gives average fuel economy of 50-60mpg. All models are in lower road-tax brackets, but they’re in high insurance groups for a city car.
Suzuki Ignis vs rivals
There aren’t any other city car-size SUVs like the Ignis, but it has lots of rivals in the conventional hatchback category, such as the Fiat 500 and the Hyundai i10. Among them, the Ignis stands out for its practicality, comfort and tough SUV looks.

Suzuki Ignis common questions
Safety organisation Euro NCAP gave the Ignis a three-star rating out of a possible five. It lacks some of the advanced driver safety systems that Euro NCAP looks for. Still, all models have six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring and lane-departure warning. Top-spec SZ5 models also have automatic emergency braking.
The Ignis is available with a mild-hybrid system, which Suzuki calls SHVS or Boosterjet. It’s an extra electrical system that helps to improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions. It also makes the engine a little smoother and more responsive. Some models built before 2020, and all models built since 2020, have the system. You can tell the difference by the ‘SHVS’ or ‘Boosterjet’ badges on the car.
