Thinking of getting a Seat Leon FR?

What is the Seat Leon FR?

The Leon FR is a sporty trim level for the Seat Leon hatchback. Rather than being a high-performance ‘hot hatch’ like the more powerful Cupra Leon, it’s a version that gives a sportier look and feel than the standard Leon, while still keeping running costs at a minimum.

What is the Seat Leon?

The Leon is Seat’s mid-size hatchback and a rival for cars such as the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra. It has a sportier look and feel than many of its rivals and it’s a great choice if you enjoy driving – but even if that’s not a priority for you, it has lots of space for this type of car and feels well made. You can choose from three-door and five-door hatchback models, as well as estate models, and there are lots of versions to choose from.

What does FR stand for?

FR is a trim level that Seat makes available on most of its models. FR is short for Formula Racing, which gives you a hint about the sporty features included with it.

Where does the Seat Leon FR sit in the range?

The latest Seat Leon was introduced in 2020, although there are plenty of the previous model, introduced in 2014, for sale on Cazoo. In both versions, the sporty FR trims sit towards the top of the range, alongside the more luxury-focused Xcellence trims.

The latest Seat Leon has two FR models: the FR and the slightly more feature-packed FR Sport. Earlier Seat Leons had the standard FR and several upgraded versions including the FR Sport, the FR Titanium, the FR Black Edition and the FR Technology.

The FR’s sporty looks and strong levels of equipment have made it popular, especially because it's still very affordable for this type of car. For that reason, there are lots of used examples to choose from.

How is the Seat Leon FR different from the rest of the Leon range?

The FR is a trim level rather than an entirely different car to the standard Leon. You can spot one by the FR’s styling upgrades that give it a more sporty look. It also has a few more sporty touches inside including more-supportive seats.

The features you get as standard with the latest Seat Leon FR include 17-inch alloy wheels, tinted windows, LED headlights and electrically folding door mirrors. You also get slightly different bumper designs compared with lower-spec Leon models, three-zone air conditioning and a wireless charging tray for your phone.

Like other Leon models, you’ll also get a touchscreen infotainment system with sat nav and Apple CarPlay.

The suspension is lower and firmer than on other Leon models, which makes the car feel more agile through corners, although it also gives you and your passengers a slightly less smooth ride over bumps.

The FR Sport model is one step above the Leon FR and adds 18-inch alloy wheels and what Seat calls a ‘Winter Pack’. This includes heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and heated windscreen washers to stop them freezing over on cold days.

The older Leon FR  model – sold new until 2020 – has a very similar vibe, but less high-tech equipment. However, as one of the top models in the range it still offers desirable features. Some enhanced versions add extra features – for example, the FR Black Edition has larger 18-inch, black alloy wheels and a matte-black finish on the front grille and door mirrors while the FR Technology has an upgraded infotainment system.

Higher-powered versions of the older Leon FR have more sophisticated suspension components, which should give driving enthusiasts more fun behind the wheel.
