Thinking of getting a Mini Clubman?
The style of the car
The Clubman is an estate version of the Mini that’s similar in size to a small family car. It’s good looking with plenty of Mini’s cheeky design details. Its six-door layout (the boot is accessed using a pair of van-style doors), makes the Clubman a practical family car, while the personalisation options available on new Minis mean that there’s lots of variety in used models.
How it drives
The Clubman is fun to drive and benefits from Mini’s entertaining ‘go-kart’ handling. The driving position is excellent and the Mini is easy to place on the road and simple to park. The Clubman is comfortable over bumps and relaxing over long distances. All engines deliver nippy performance, and while the manual gearbox is smooth, the automatic option takes the hassle out of driving in traffic.
The interior
The five seater Clubman is a compact car but there’s plenty of interior space. Those in the rear get good head and legroom and there’s lots of useful storage areas. The boot will hold three medium-sized suitcases and the ‘barn-style’ twin rear doors make loading easier in tight parking spaces. Interior build quality is excellent and the controls on the stylish dashboard are all within easy reach, including the intuitive infotainment system. Entry-level Classic models get air con and a DAB radio, while Sport adds parking sensors and Exclusive gets leather trim. Cooper and Cooper S models feature sports seats and a metal finish for the pedals.
Running costs and reliability
Clubman prices are similar to premium rivals yet running costs will be lower, thanks to its range of efficient engines. Insurance and tax bills are low and Mini offers great value prepaid servicing packages that make maintenance cheaper than rivals. Mini models offer good reliability and will make a trouble-free choice. The Clubman features plenty of safety kit and scored four-stars when tested by Euro NCAP.
How it compares with similar cars
The Mini Clubman is bigger than the Mini hatchback and smaller than the Mini Countryman SUV. Overall the Clubman is more spacious than the Audi A1 and as good to drive as the BMW 1 Series. The Clubman was named ‘Estate Car of the Year’ at the Honest John Awards.
Small estates are practical yet easy to park and cost-effective. Here’s our guide to the best used compact estate cars you can buy.
