Having a rear-engine installed in the Twingo gives it 33 cm more storage space than previous models, even though it was only 10 cm shorter structurally. The rear placement also opened up more upfront cabin space, providing space for more crash-protection structures, which was one of the factors that earned it favourable scores in crash tests. Finally, the layout left it with extra space for the front wheels to turn up to 45 degrees, responsible for its exceptional manoeuvrability in tight spaces.
The Twingo has the exact rear-engine placement as the Porsche 911, although not as outrageously agile as the legendary sports car, it's still plenty good if you're looking for a sporty city car.
Renault Twingo is a reasonably comfortable car, regardless of which trim you opt for, thanks to its refined suspension to take the edge off speed bumps and potholes. It becomes even more exciting to drive at increased speed, although there's a slight wind noise that can take away from the enjoyment if you're after a quiet drive.
The Twingo outshines many of its rivals when it comes to cabin space, comfortably accommodating 4 adults. The spacious cabin is due to the engine layout, which comes at the cost of functional boot space. With only 188 litres, it still leaves more boot storage than the Skoda Citigo and Toyota Aygo's, 168 litres of boot space. Sliding down the 90-degree rear seat increases the luggage capacity to 285 litres, and you can further expand the storage up to 959 litres by folding down both rear seats.
Despite the benefits of its rear-engine layout, The Renault Twingo does not transform into a mini-Porsche 911. The Twingo is a sporty city car, so it wouldn't be fair to compare it to a true sports car. However, you can expect it to compare very well against other sporty city cars, as it provides excellent manoeuvrability and effortless parking in tight spaces. If you're after a slightly sportier ride, then you should go with Renault Twingo GT.
Front-engine cars perform better in frontal crash tests because the engine weight doesn't damage the passenger compartment. Renault made up for this by engineering crash pathways that force the engine downwards during a collision. As a result, the Euro NCAP awarded the Renault Twingo a 4-star crash rating, which is considered impressive for a compact car of its class.
