Thinking of getting a Peugeot 508 SW?

The style of the car

The 508 SW is one of the best-looking large estate cars. The latest version, which went on sale in 2018, really stands out from the crowd thanks to its sleek exterior and futuristic interior design. Older models aren’t as distinctive, but they still look great. The latest Peugeot 508 is also available as a hatchback, while the previous model is also available as a saloon.

How it drives

The 508 SW feels light and responsive to drive. That makes nipping around town a breeze and it’s quite good fun on winding country roads. It’s slightly smaller than some family estate cars, which can make finding a parking space more straightforward. You can choose from a range of petrol and diesel engines or opt for the plug-in hybrid. Diesel and petrol models are available with a manual or automatic gearbox, while the hybrid is automatic-only. All versions give good acceleration.

The interior

The 508 SW is an estate car with five doors and five seats. It’s slightly shorter than estate versions of the Ford Mondeo or the Vauxhall Insignia, although it’s still a large car by most standards. The interior is roomy, with as much space as most families are likely to need. The sleek roofline of the latest model means that back-seat headroom isn’t as plentiful as in some rivals, however. The boot is big enough for four large suitcases and the back seats fold down for more space. The dashboard has a high-tech look, yet it’s generally user-friendly and the interior has a premium feel throughout. All models come with smartphone connectivity, air con and cruise control.

Running costs

The 508 SW is very fuel efficient, whether it has a petrol or diesel engine. According to official average figures for the latest version, petrol models give fuel economy of 36mpg to 49mpg and diesels give 45mpg to 63mpg. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model has an official average of more than 160mpg but what you get in real-world driving will depend on how often you charge the battery and how you drive it. The maximum electric-only battery range is 39 miles and after that you’ll be using the petrol engine alone. Road tax and insurance bills should be low. Safety organisation Euro NCAP gave the 508 SW a full five-star rating.

How it compares with similar cars

Rivals to the 508 SW include estate versions of the Ford Mondeo and Skoda Superb. It’s not quite as spacious as those cars but the 508 SW is still very practical and its slightly shorter length might make it easier to park. It looks great inside and out and its engines are especially smooth and fuel-efficient.
