Thinking of getting a BMW X5 M Sport?
What is the BMW X5 M Sport?
M Sport is the sporty-looking trim available for the BMW X5. It gives you a car with styling that’s similar to BMW’s high-performance ‘M’ models, but with more-affordable running costs. With a generous amount of features included as standard, the M Sport trim is very popular, which means you’ll have lots of examples to choose from.
What is the BMW X5?
The X5 is a large, luxurious and sporty SUV from BMW. It’s not the biggest SUV that BMW makes (that would be the seven-seat X7) but, as the name suggests, it’s bigger than the X1, X2, X3 or X4. The X5 is the same size as the very similar X6, which has a more sleek, sporty shape compared to the more angular, practical focus of the X5. Despite its size and spacious interior, the X5 is impressively sporty to drive – without sacrificing the comfort of your passengers.
The latest model is the fourth generation of X5. It comes with five seats as standard although some models had the option of seven seats when bought new, which could be very useful if you’ve got a large family.
What does M Sport mean?
BMW produces an extensive range of high-performance M cars. They include models such as the M3, M5 and M8, and SUVs like the X5M. M stands for motorsport and refers to BMW’s in-house racing team, which has competed with much success since the 1970s.
The M Sport trim level was introduced in the mid-2000s, giving buyers similar styling to the M cars but without their high purchase prices and running costs. It’s a combination that has proven enormously successful: M Sport is the most popular BMW trim level by a large margin.
Where does the BMW X5 M Sport sit in the range?
The M Sport trim sits in the middle of the X5 range. In the latest X5, sold new from 2018, the lower trim level is called xLine. In the older X5, sold new from 2013 to 2018, it’s called SE. Above M Sport are the high-performance M models. M Sport has the same features included as standard as you get in the xLine/SE trims including sat nav, leather seats, cruise control and a whole lot more. You do pay a bit more for M Sport, though, which goes towards its bigger alloy wheels and sportier exterior.
How is the BMW X5 M Sport different from the rest of the X5 range?
The primary difference between an X5 M Sport and lower trim levels in the range is its sporty-looking design. It features bigger alloy wheels (20-inches in diameter on the latest X5), deeper bumpers and deeper side panels below the doors, and a large rear spoiler. Inside, you’ll find sports seats and a chunkier steering wheel. The suspension is slightly lower, too, which gives the car a more precise and responsive feel on the road.
BMW X5 M Sport common questions
Pretty much every BMW car sold new since around 2010 is available with the M Sport package. There are so many that it’s easier to list the cars that don’t have an M Sport version: these are the i3 electric car and the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.
