Thinking of buying a used BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer?

The style of the car

The stylish five-door 2 Series Gran Tourer is a versatile people carrier. Distinctively designed and beautifully built, the BMW is a premium car. It’s impressively spacious while the large windows create a bright and airy feel. M Sport models feature larger wheels and a sporty body kit.

How it drives

The 2 Series Gran Tourer is a big car but, with agile handling and strong grip, it’s more fun to drive than most rivals. M Sport models have stiffer suspension and lean less in corners, but overall the BMW is comfortable and relaxing. Light steering and excellent road visibility mean it’s easy to drive and park, while the optional automatic gearbox is perfect for town driving. The petrol and diesel engines are quiet and deliver quick acceleration. The four-wheel drive xDrive versions offer extra control on slippery surfaces and make good tow cars.

The interior

The 2 Series Active Tourer’s well-designed interior is comfortable and versatile with seven-seats. Those in the back get lots of room and you can fit three child seats across the back seat. The third row seats fold easily from the boot floor and are perfect for children or adults on shorter journeys. There’s loads of useful storage and neat features such as fold out picnic tables. Even with all seven seats in use, the 145-litres of boot space is enough for a pram and some squashy bags. In five-seat mode space in the boot is an impressive 560-litres, which is easily enough for three large suitcases. Standard equipment is generous, with entry-level SE models featuring climate control as well as BMW’s excellent iDrive infotainment system which features sat nav and Apple Carplay. Luxury trim adds leather and wood trim, while the M Sport has unique trim inserts and a sports steering wheel.

Running costs and reliability

The 2 Series Gran Tourer is competitively priced against premium rivals and is just as well equipped. BMW is famed for its efficient engines and the 2 Series Gran Tourer is no exception. Even the most powerful petrol engine is capable of an impressive 47.9mpg, while road tax costs are lower than most. Great value service packs keep maintenance affordable. BMW has a strong reputation for reliability and the 2 Series Gran Tourer should be durable and dependable. It hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP, but the mechanically similar five-seat 2 Series Active Tourer was awarded five stars.

How it compares with similar cars

The 2 Series Gran Tourer is the seven-seat version of the five-seat BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and is more spacious and versatile than the bigger BMW 3 Series Gran Tourer. It’s more luxurious than the Ford S-Max and better to drive than the VW Touran.
