Seat Ateca v Skoda Karoq

Searching for a family SUV? The SEAT Ateca and Skoda Karoq are two solid options to consider. At first glance, these cars might seem almost identical. Both brands are part of the Volkswagen Group, and the two cars share many of the same parts and features. Yet, there are key differences that could make one a better fit for you. Here's our in-depth comparison of the Ateca and Karoq, focusing on the areas that matter most, from boot space and comfort to running costs and used prices.

There's also some news worth knowing if you're shopping for an Ateca. After a ten-year run, SEAT and Cupra stopped selling the Ateca new in the UK in early 2026, so it's now a used-only buy. The Karoq, meanwhile, is still on sale new, with an all-new version expected in late 2027. If you'd like a quick refresher on the basics first, our guide to what is an SUV explains what makes an SUV an SUV.

SEAT Ateca vs Skoda Karoq: Interior and tech

Both the Ateca and Karoq boast interiors that mirror their exteriors. The Ateca has a sporty look, while the Karoq features softer edges. Despite their predominantly black and grey shades, large windows allow plenty of natural light in, making these cabins pleasant places to spend time. Opting for a panoramic sunroof can enhance this airy feel.

Both dashboards are user-friendly, but the Karoq's layout is slightly more intuitive. The Ateca's 2020 facelift brought a bigger touchscreen, measuring 8.25 inches on entry-level cars and 9.2 inches further up the range, along with digital dials on every model. The newer system can be a bit tricky to learn at first. Both models come well-equipped with features like air conditioning, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and DAB radio. Higher trims offer extras like sat nav, parking sensors, cruise control, and even heated leather seats.

The Karoq got its own facelift in 2022, with a wider grille, slimmer lights and digital dials as standard, plus the option of a 9.2-inch touchscreen and matrix LED headlights on higher-spec cars. The latest Karoqs are especially well kitted out, with even the entry-level SE Edition getting heated front seats, a reversing camera and keyless entry. If all the screen talk sounds a bit baffling, our guide to car infotainment systems explains it in plain English.

SEAT Ateca vs Skoda Karoq: Boot space and practicality

Designed with families in mind, the Ateca and Karoq excel in practicality and convenience. Both provide ample space for a family of four, with adequate headroom and legroom. However, the Karoq offers a bit more room in the back, especially for taller passengers. The middle back seat in both cars is best suited for occasional use by children due to its narrow and firm design.

The Karoq shines slightly brighter in terms of interior storage, offering larger door pockets, more bag hooks, a removable bin, and a parking-ticket holder. Both vehicles feature spacious boots, but the Karoq's are slightly larger at 521 litres compared to the Ateca's 510 litres. With the rear seats folded, the Ateca offers 1,604 litres of space, while the Karoq provides 1,630 litres. Opting for a higher-spec Karoq with 'Varioflex' seats adds versatility, as the three rear seats slide individually and can be taken out altogether, giving a whopping 1,810 litres of space when all three seats are removed.

The seats are heavy, though, so taking them out is easier with two people. It's also worth knowing that four-wheel-drive versions of both cars lose a little boot space to the extra hardware underneath, with the Ateca 4Drive dropping to around 485 litres.

SEAT Ateca vs Skoda Karoq: Driving experience

SEAT cars often emphasise sporty handling, and the Ateca is no exception. It feels sharper and more responsive on the road compared to the Karoq, which leans more towards comfort. The Karoq offers a quieter and more settled ride, especially at higher speeds. Both cars handle long motorway journeys and city driving with ease, thanks to their raised driving positions and large windows for better visibility.

Both models are available with a range of 'TSI' petrol and 'TDI' diesel engines, paired with either manual or 'DSG' automatic gearboxes. With power outputs ranging from around 108bhp to 187bhp, the 148bhp 1.5 TSI petrol typically offers the best balance of performance and economy, and it's the engine you'll find in most used examples. For those needing additional traction, the most powerful variants come with four-wheel drive. Diesel models with this setup are particularly good for towing, with the Ateca able to pull up to 2,100kg and the Karoq up to 2,000kg. The Ateca was also sold as the high-performance Cupra Ateca, which has a 296bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine and four-wheel drive. It's seriously quick, and you'll find a good choice in our listings.

Diesel is getting harder to find, particularly in the Karoq, where the only diesel offered in recent years has been a 148bhp 2.0 TDI with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Unless you cover lots of motorway miles or tow regularly, a petrol is likely to be the better bet, as our guide to petrol vs diesel explains.

SEAT Ateca vs Skoda Karoq: Cost of ownership

Given that both the Ateca and Karoq share the same engines, their fuel economy is nearly identical. Official figures vary, reflecting changes in calculation methods, as a tougher and more realistic test called WLTP was phased in from 2017. Petrol models can return between 32mpg and 54mpg, while diesel versions range from 39mpg to 62mpg.

Road tax and insurance costs are comparable and reasonable for this type of vehicle. Most cars registered from April 2017 onwards pay the standard flat rate of road tax, which is currently £200 a year. However, some top-spec models, including later Karoq SportLine 4x4s, cost more than £40,000 new, so they pay an extra £440 a year in years two to six. Earlier cars are taxed on their CO2 emissions, so it's worth checking the GOV.UK vehicle tax rate tables before you buy.

Clean air zone charges shouldn't be a worry with either car, as every Ateca and Karoq meets the Euro 6 emissions standard needed to drive in London's ULEZ without paying. Our guide to the the Ultra Low Emissions Zone has more on how the charges work.

SEAT Ateca vs Skoda Karoq: Safety and reliability

Safety is paramount, and both the Ateca and Karoq excel here. Each was awarded a five-star rating from Euro NCAP, in 2016 and 2017 respectively, thanks to features like automatic emergency braking, driver tiredness monitoring, and seven airbags. Additional safety options, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist, are available on higher trims.

It's worth knowing that Euro NCAP ratings are only valid for six years, so cars built after that point are officially 'unrated'. That doesn't mean newer cars are any less safe, just that they haven't been retested against Euro NCAP's latest, tougher standards, as its own guide to star ratings explains.

When it comes to reliability, both cars use tried-and-tested Volkswagen Group engines and gearboxes. Skoda does tend to score better than SEAT in independent owner surveys, though, with some SEAT owners less impressed by the fit and finish.

SEAT Ateca vs Skoda Karoq: Dimensions

Understanding the dimensions can also help make an informed decision. The two cars are almost exactly the same length, with the facelifted Ateca measuring 4,381mm and the facelifted Karoq 4,390mm, while earlier versions were a little shorter at 4,363mm and 4,382mm respectively. Both stand at around 1.6 metres tall, depending on the version.

If you have a narrow garage or driveway, the width with the mirrors folded out is the figure to check. Here, the Karoq is the slimmer car at 2,025mm, compared with 2,078mm for the Ateca. Neither is much bigger than a typical family hatchback, so both are easy enough to park, but if you'd like something smaller still, our guide to the best small SUVs has plenty of ideas.

SEAT Ateca vs Skoda Karoq: Frequently asked questions

Are the SEAT Ateca and Skoda Karoq the same car?

Not quite. They're built on the same Volkswagen Group platform and share engines and gearboxes, but they have different bodies, interiors and suspension settings. The Ateca is set up to feel sportier, while the Karoq focuses on comfort and practicality.

Has the SEAT Ateca been discontinued?

Yes, in the UK. SEAT and Cupra stopped selling the Ateca new in early 2026, after a ten-year run. SEAT and Cupra dealers can still service existing cars, and because the Ateca shares so many parts with other Volkswagen Group models, parts shouldn't be hard to find.

Which is bigger, the Ateca or the Karoq?

They're almost exactly the same size on the outside, but the Karoq has a slightly bigger boot, at 521 litres compared with 510 litres, and a little more legroom in the back.

Which is more reliable, the Ateca or the Karoq?

Both use the same proven engines and gearboxes, but Skoda generally scores better than SEAT in owner reliability surveys. Whichever you choose, a full service history is the best sign of a well-looked-after car.

Verdict

Both the SEAT Ateca and Skoda Karoq are excellent choices for families, offering practicality, good driving dynamics, and great value. If you prioritise a sportier drive, the Ateca might be for you. But if extra space and comfort are higher on your list of priorities, the Karoq is likely the better fit. The Ateca's lower used prices make it the value pick, especially now that it's no longer sold new, while the Karoq makes more sense if you want a nearly new car with the latest kit.
