Used Toyota Yaris hybrid cars

There are many reasons why Toyota Yaris hybrid models are so popular. They’re easy to drive, are well-equipped and their running costs are low. Toyota’s compact Yaris hatchback has been available with hybrid power since 2012, making earlier models among the cheapest used hybrid cars you can buy. The latest, post-2020, Yaris is available only with hybrid power.

The first Yaris hybrid model was sold new from 2012 to 2020, available as a three-door or five-door hatchback. From 2012 to 2014, there were three trim levels: T3, T4 and T Spirit. A significant update in 2014 coincided with a new trim structure consisting of Active, Icon, Sport and Excel. An Icon Plus trim arrived later.

The Yaris Hybrid was updated again in 2017 and trim levels on this version include Active, Icon, Icon Tech, Design, Bi-tone and Excel. You’ll find special-edition versions for sale too, such as the Y20, the Orange Edition and the GR Sport.

The current Toyota Yaris was introduced in 2020 as a hybrid-only model. It went on sale with four trim levels – Icon, Design, Dynamic and Excel – plus the high-spec Launch Edition. There are now sporty-looking GR Sport and high-spec Premiere Edition versions too.

The pre-2020 Toyota Yaris hybrid was very well-equipped for a compact hatchback. If you want lots of high-tech kit look for the high-spec Excel trim which, depending on the year of registration, may feature 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, dual-zone climate control and part-leather seats.

Every version of the post-2020 Toyota Yaris hybrid comes with a lot of features as standard, including alloy wheels, air con, a reversing camera and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Higher-spec models have a larger display screen with sat nav, along with cosmetic and tech upgrades.

The original Yaris Hybrid (2012-2020) could give about 80-85mpg depending on the specific model, according to official figures, but it’s worth noting that these figures are based on an older way of calculating a car’s fuel economy. You’re more likely to see between 55mpg and 60mpg in real-world driving, which is still an impressive result.

The latest Yaris Hybrid can give an average fuel economy of 57.6mpg to 70.6mpg according to the later, more accurate official test procedure. The precise figure depends on the trim level and size of the alloy wheels, so while you might be tempted to choose a high-spec model, you’ll enjoy lower running costs by sticking with one of the more affordable versions.

There are many small hatchbacks to rival the Yaris hybrid models, most notably the Honda Jazz, Renault Clio and Mazda2, all of which are available with hybrid power. Indeed, the current Mazda2 Hybrid is a Yaris hybrid in all but name and badges.
