Thinking of getting a Tesla Model 3 Long Range?

What is the Tesla Model 3 Long Range?

The Tesla Model 3 Long Range is exactly what you’d expect from the name – the Tesla Model 3 saloon with the longest battery range. It can do more than 370 miles on a full battery charge, according to the official figures. The Long Range sits in the middle of the Model 3 line-up when it comes to performance, which still makes it fast enough to out-accelerate many considerably more powerful petrol-powered sports cars. It also has four-wheel drive, which gives you extra grip and reassurance on wet and slippery roads.

What is the Tesla Model 3?

The Model 3 is the most compact car Tesla makes but it’s far from small. It’s about the same size as the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, or one of its electric rivals, the Polestar 2. Although it looks like a hatchback, the Model 3 is actually a saloon with a boot lid hinged below the back window.

The Model 3 was introduced in the US in 2017, and became available in the UK in 2019. It’s been hugely popular, with sales numbers that have featured in the list of the UK’s top 10 best-selling cars.

What does Long Range mean?

Long Range is a rather matter-of-fact name indicating that, of all the Model 3s available, this one can go the furthest on a fully charged battery: 374 miles, according to official figures. Other Model 3s can achieve a range of 241 to 368 miles, depending on the model.

Where does the Tesla Model 3 Long Range sit in the range?

The Tesla Model 3 Long Range sits in the middle of the range, between the entry-point car (known from 2019 to 2021 as Standard Range Plus and subsequently as just the Model 3) and the Performance. The three models have different amounts of power. The Long Range is pretty much in the middle having roughly 100bhp more power than the entry-point car and 100bhp less than Performance.

How is the Tesla Model 3 Long Range different from the rest of the Model 3 range?

The Tesla Model 3 Long Range looks identical to the standard car, with the same wheels and standard features, although the Long Range has a small Dual Motor badge at the back to indicate that it has four-wheel drive (the standard car has one motor driving only the rear wheels). The Performance model sits lower, has different wheels and a carbon-fibre spoiler.

What marks out the Long Range from the rest of the Model 3 line-up is the power of its electric motors and the distance it can go on a full charge. The differences are mainly a result of the car’s software configuration, rather than differences in hardware.
