The terms ‘4x4’ and ‘SUV’ are interchangeable. They refer to a type of car that rides high off the ground and can – in theory at least – be driven over rough, off-road terrain. SUV has been the preferred term for such cars for many years. Although 4x4 also indicates four-wheel drive, not all of Kia’s SUVs are actually available with four-wheel drive.

Although Kia produces a wide range of SUV-style cars, only two of them qualify as a 4x4, as they’re available with four-wheel drive. These are the more powerful petrol and diesel versions of the mid-size Sportage, and most versions of the large seven-seater Sorento. Check the specification of the car you’re interested in to make sure it has four-wheel drive.
Both the Sportage and Sorento are great family cars, with or without four-wheel drive. They’re reasonably capable when driving off-road, as well. For most people, the main benefit of a 4x4 is that they feel more secure in wet, muddy or icy conditions than a front or rear-wheel drive car. They’re far better for towing too. Having four-wheel drive does reduce fuel economy though.
Kia are very competitively priced when new and have a lot of equipment as standard, which makes them good value for money as a used buy. Running costs should be reasonable but bear in mind that four-wheel drive does reduce fuel economy when compared with equivalent front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive models.
