Used Audi automatic cars

Almost every modern Audi is available with an automatic transmission, either as an optional extra or fitted as standard.

For example, the A1, Audi’s smallest and most affordable car, comes with a five-speed manual gearbox on the entry-level Sport 25 TFSi model. When new, you can order the same car with Audi’s ‘S tronic’ automatic gearbox at extra cost. The high-spec S line 35 TFSi comes with an automatic gearbox (a manual isn’t available).

At the opposite end of the Audi range, the S8 four-door saloon has a ‘Tiptronic’ automatic transmission as standard. All Audi pure-electric cars are automatic.

The S tronic is the name Audi gives to its most-common automatic gearbox and, if you’re buying a newer Audi, it’ll have seven forward speeds. (An older Audi might have a six-speed S tronic gearbox, but the fundamentals are the same.)

An Audi with S tronic can be used in fully automatic mode or you can change up or down yourself using the gear lever or, if fitted, using the ‘paddles’ mounted behind the steering wheel.

Tiptronic is Audi’s name for its eight-speed automatic gearbox, found in  its high-performance cars.

With the exception of some of the entry-level models, every Audi is available with an automatic gearbox. Take the A3, for example: it’s Audi’s most popular model in the UK. As of early 2024, the 30 TFSi and 35 TFSi models are available new with a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed S tronic, while the 35 TDI is automatic only. The sporty S3 or RS3 models are available only with the S tronic automatic gearbox.

Some other high-performance models, namely the RS4, RS5, RS6, RS7 and RS Q8 come with  an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox, while most  of Audi’s pure-electric cars have a single-speed automatic gearbox. The exception is the E-tron GT, which is a two-speed automatic.

Every Audi SUV is available with an automatic gearbox, either as an optional extra or included as standard.

Audi’s SUVs have a Q in their name and, in the loosest sense, the larger the number, the bigger the car. So, in size order, these are: Q2, Q3, Q4 E-tron, Q5, Q7, Q8 and Q8 E-tron. The Q2 and Q8 are available as sporty models: the SQ2 fitted with a seven-speed S tronic gearbox and the RS Q8 has an eight-speed Tiptronic.
