There are many factors to consider when choosing your car and for some of us comfort is one of the most important. Everyone has their own idea of what makes a car comfortable but there are afew things that we think most people will agree on: a smooth ride, a good driving position, supportive seats, a user-friendly dashboard and a quiet interior.

With those in mind, here’s our pick of the top 10 most comfortable used cars you can buy.

1. Range Rover

You’d expect the Range Rover, as a large luxury SUV with a huge and opulent interior, to be supremely comfortable but it goes above and beyond expectations. In short, this is one of the most comfortable cars out there.

Air suspension helps cushion you from any lumps and bumps on the road, while the commanding driving position makes you feel like the king or queen of the road. The Range Rover’s seats are what elevate it to the next level of comfort. It’s like sitting in your favourite armchair, but with the support you need to stay ache-free on long trips. Add in perfectly placed armrests on either side of you and a clear view through the large upright windows and this is a car that makes any journey something to savour.

2. Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Large executive saloons and estates are traditionally very comfortable types of car, designed to deliver a soothing driving experience. The Mercedes E-Class is no exception. Whether you go for the spacious saloon or the even more practical estate model you’ll find it offers effortless performance and a quiet, comfortable drive.

The ride is especially smooth and the latest model has a huge digital dashboard display that’s easy on the eye and intuitive to use. There’s plenty of adjustment for the front seats and steering wheel, which helps you find your ideal driving position. The seats are well-shaped and fit for any shape and size. The interior has a high-quality feel that adds to the sense of wellbeing, as well as high-tech features that help to keep you informed and entertained on the move.

3. Audi A8

If your idea of comfort in a car is an interior that isolates you from the noise and hubbub of the outside world, then an Audi A8 will seem close to perfection.

Most models have double glazing, which helps to create an interior so quiet that you could almost hear a pin drop, while the front seats have a huge range of electric adjustments so that you can fine-tune your position perfectly.

A choice of powerful engines and a smooth automatic gearbox make the A8 effortless to drive. But since this is a luxury limousine at heart, the best place to enjoy the ride might be as a lucky passenger, stretched out in the sumptuous back seats.

4. Ford Focus

Even if you’ve never owned a Focus, you probably know someone who has. It’s one of the UK’s best-selling cars and it’s popular for a reason. It manages to be fun to drive yet also comfortable and relaxing – and that’s not a trick that many cars can pull off. Suspension that gives a smooth ride yet keeps the car level through corners is crucial when you’ve got the family on board and want to get to your destination with the minimum of tears, tantrums and travel sickness.

Go for a high-spec car if you can because the extra features –including heated seats and adjustable lumbar support – help to make this humble family hatchback a true comfort hero.

5. Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat is another family favourite and it's another car that has an uncanny knack of making hectic modern life feel less stressful. Settle into the well-shaped seats and you immediately feel at ease thanks to their comfort and the clear, user-friendly dashboard ahead of you.

Everything about the way the Passat drives is smooth, from the way it feels to shift gears and to steer to suspension that softens the blow of bumps in the road. The interior is packed with useful tech and is very spacious, especially if you go for the estate model.

6. Volvo XC40

Volvo makes some of the most comfortable cars around, with models such as the XC90 SUV and the V90 estate car giving you a real feeling of serene Scandinavian luxury. You don’t have to go for one of the brand’s large models to get big-car comfort, however. The XC40 is a compact, cost-effective option that’s one of the most comfortable small SUVs available.

A big part of that comfort comes from seats which, as in most Volvos, are a masterclass in support. The rest of the interior adds to the serene feel, with a large, easy-to-use touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard and a calming minimalist design throughout. Both the diesel and petrol models are quiet. For maximum comfort go for the plug-in hybrid model, which gives you an electric-only range that allows you to drive in near-silence for almost 30 miles.

7. Peugeot 3008

The Peugeot 3008 stands out as another SUV that provides more comfort than most of its rivals. A silky-smooth ride is a great start, and all of the engine options are quiet. There’s also a choice of two plug-in hybrid models that give you an even quieter electric-only range of up to 35 miles.

The interior is practical and has an appealingly futuristic look. It’s comfortable, too, with a dashboard that curves around the driver, giving a ‘cockpit’ feel and putting all of the controls within your easy reach. There are lots of creature comforts whichever model you choose. Even the least expensive versions come with two-zone climate control that allows those in the front to set separate temperatures, as well as reversing sensors that make parking that bit easier.

8. Hyundai i10

The Hyundai i10 proves that if comfort is high on your list of priorities you don’t necessarily need a big car or a big budget to achieve it. Although it’s one of the smallest hatchbacks around, the i10 is as comfortable to travel in as some much more expensive cars. The ride is especially smooth for something so compact, the engines are quiet and the seats are a good size and shape.

Compact dimensions make the i10 perfectly suited to urban driving yet it’s just as at-home on the motorway, where it feels relaxed and settled even when lorries and big SUVs thunder by. The interior is sturdy and simple and the dashboard is refreshingly easy to use, while running costs are very low.

9. Citroen Grand C4 Picasso/SpaceTourer

If you’ve got a big family and want to ferry them around in as much comfort as possible, look no further than the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso/SpaceTourer (the car was updated and re-named SpaceTourer in 2018).

This mid-size MPV helps to keep any squabbles and cries of ‘are we nearly there yet’ to a minimum thanks to seven soft yet supportive seats and a cushiony, forgiving ride. Even children in the seats right at the back have space to get comfy and, as parents know, the key to achieving peace and comfort in a car (or anywhere else) is keeping the kids quiet and happy. Large windows make the interior light and airy, while clever storage areas help keep clutter to a minimum.

10. Tesla Model S

The Tesla Model S is famous for its long range and rapid acceleration yet it’s also one of the most comfortable used electric cars you can buy.

Its exceptionally quiet electric motor keeps noise to a minimum while the car’s sleek shape reduces wind noise at speed, as well as helping you to get maximum range from the battery. The luxurious interior is spacious, while standard air suspension gives a smooth drive however bad the road.
