Used Mini cars buying guide
If you want a compact car that has retro charm but with the latest high-tech features and a premium feel, a Mini could be just what you’re looking for. Used Mini car models range from small three-door hatchbacks to larger five-door SUVs, with convertible models in between – and the choice of petrol, diesel, hybrid or pure-electric power.
Mini is one of the best-known car brands in the world and although it’s now owned by BMW, many Mini models are still made in the UK and every Mini has design elements inspired by classic Mini models of the past.
Which used Mini cars are for sale?
Mini produces a range of compact cars, the most well-known being the Mini Hatch. This popular hatchback model is available as a three- or a five-door model. The Mini Convertible is a two-door convertible version of the three-door Mini Hatch.
The Mini Clubman is essentially a longer, estate version of the Mini Hatch, with two side-hinged back doors instead of the hatchback boot lid you get with every other estate car.
Slightly larger still is the Countryman – a five-door SUV that’s a rival for cars such as the Renault Captur and Toyota C-HR.
The Mini Coupe and Mini Roadster were produced between 2011 and 2015 – these two-door models were based on the previous Mini Hatch but didn’t sell in large numbers.
Are there any hybrid or electric Mini models?
The Mini Countryman Plug-in Hybrid is the only used Mini available in hybrid form. According to official figures, the latest version offers a pure-electric range of up to 26 miles when fully charged.
The Mini Electric is the only pure-electric Mini. It’s a battery-powered version of the three-door Mini Hatch and has a range of up to 143 miles when fully charged, according to official figures.
What are the most popular Mini models?
Mini Hatch
The Mini Hatch is a premium compact hatchback available as either a three-door model or as a slightly longer, more practical five-door model. It’s available in a huge array of colour combinations and the model range includes cost-effective, fuel-efficient versions at one end and high-performance models at the other.
Mini Convertible
The Mini Convertible is a convertible version of the Mini Hatch with a folding fabric roof and four seats. It’s not very roomy but it’s a lot of fun to drive and one of the least expensive convertible models around.
Mini Clubman
You can think of the Mini Clubman as an estate version of the Mini Hatch city car. It’s longer (and wider) than the five-door Mini Hatch and has a larger boot, while access to the boot is via two side-hinged doors in the back that open in a van-like – and dog-friendly – arrangement.
Mini Countryman
As of early 2024 the Mini Countryman is the only Mini SUV you can buy new. An all-new Mini Countryman model went on sale in early 2024 replacing the previous 2017-2024 version. While the 2024 model is about the same size as a Nissan Qashqai, the previous version is slightly smaller and closer in size to the Audi Q2 or Volkswagen T-Roc.
Which Mini models are SUVs?
The Mini Countryman is Mini’s first-ever SUV, introduced in 2010. It’s also the only SUV model Mini has sold new since 2016. A (slightly larger) second-generation model went on sale in 2017 and an all-new Mini Countryman went on sale in 2024.
A three-door, coupe version of the Countryman called the Mini Paceman was sold new between 2013 and 2016 but wasn’t replaced when production ended.
A completely new five-door Mini SUV called the Mini Aceman is expected to be introduced in 2024. It will be slightly smaller than the Countryman and is likely to be available only as a pure-electric model.
