The Audi A6 Avant is a large estate car that’s packed with premium appeal. Its sheer size makes it very practical, with ample space for five people and their luggage. All models look classy, while S Line models have larger wheels and different bumper designs for a sportier look. The Allroad version has a higher ride height and additional SUV-style trim, for a more rugged look and better ground clearance.
The A6 Avant is a great choice for long journeys because the interior is very quiet at speed. It’s also enjoyable to drive and all of the engines are smooth and powerful. The Avant is a large car but standard rear parking sensors, easy-to-use controls and an optional automatic gearbox make town driving easy. The quattro four-wheel-drive models provide extra reassurance in slippery conditions and make good tow cars. The Allroad adds some off-roading ability to the A6 Avant’s talents.
The five-seat, five-door A6 Avant is a big car that’s ideally suited to family life. There’s more than enough room for three to stretch out in the back and a selection of storage compartments and cup holders. The 586-litre boot can easily fit four large suitcases, although rivals from BMW, Volvo and Mercedes offer even more space. The back seats fold to extend space to 1680 litres, while a tie-down system helps to keep shopping bags upright.
Standard equipment is generous, with entry-level Sport trim featuring sat nav and Apple CarPlay, along with leather-trimmed and heated seats. S line trim adds more supportive sports seats, while Black Editions also have tinted rear windows.
Pricing for the A6 Avant is competitive compared with rivals such as the BMW 5 Series Touring, yet the Audi generally offers more luxury and technology. The engines are economical, with the diesels particularly well suited to drivers covering more than 12,000 miles a year. Road tax and insurance costs are on a par with rivals.
Audi has a strong reputation for reliability and you should expect the A6 Avant to be dependable. It gets the latest advanced safety features, which helped the A6 saloon score a maximum five-star rating from safety experts Euro NCAP.
The A6 Avant is Audi’s largest estate car. It’s bigger and more comfortable than the Audi A4 Avant and more practical than the similarly sized Audi A7 hatchback. The A6 Avant is more relaxing and roomier than (but not as much fun as) the BMW 5 Series Touring, and more enjoyable to drive than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate.
