The Vauxhall Grandland is a family-friendly mid-size SUV that’s very easy to live with. The interior is roomy and generously equipped with tech that’s simple to use. On top of that, the steering is light for easy around-town manoeuvring and the ride is comfortable. You can choose from a range of fuel-efficient engine options, including a plug-in hybrid and all versions represent great value.
The Grandland has been sold new since 2021 when it replaced the Grandland X, sold new from 2017 to 2021. The Grandland is essentially a heavily revised version of the Grandland X, but you can easily tell the two apart by the front-end styling – the Grandland features Vauxhall’s latest brand look, with slim headlights separated by a black panel. Inside, there’s a new dashboard fitted with a pair of digital displays – one for the infotainment system and one for the driver in place of traditional dials.
You can pick from petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid power. The petrol and diesel cars can get up to motorway speeds from a standstill swiftly enough but the plug-in hybrid feels nippier, especially when in zero-emission mode, thanks to the instant power of its electric motor. The petrol engine is available with a manual or automatic gearbox; the diesel and plug-in hybrid have automatic gearboxes as standard.
Choose from three trim and equipment packages: the entry-point Design, the sporty GS Line or the more luxurious Ultimate.
Grandland Design models have a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, two-zone climate control and cruise control among a long list of other standard features. GS Line models add sporty styling details like bigger wheels, plus built-in sat nav and a reversing camera. Top-of-the-range Ultimate models also have bright LED headlights, heated front seats, a wireless phone charging pad and a 360-degree parking camera system to make tight manoeuvres that much easier.
Grandland models with a petrol engine can give you an average fuel economy of up to 46mpg, according to official figures. Diesels can give up to 55mpg, so may be a better bet if you make lots of long journeys. The plug-in hybrid can give up to 192mpg if you regularly charge the battery, and has a zero-emission range of up to 39 miles.
Grandland rivals include the Nissan Qashqai, the Seat Ateca and the Citroen C5 Aircross. Compared to the Vauxhall, the Nissan has more tech, the Seat looks and feels sportier to drive and the Citroen has a bigger boot. But the Grandland is a good all-rounder that will serve the needs of most families very well because of its generous space, efficient engines, comfortable ride and great value.
The Grandland is very spacious with lots of headroom and legroom in both the front and back seats. Four tall adults should be comfortable on a long journey and a fifth could squeeze into the middle back seat for shorter runs. On that basis, a family of four should have all the space they need. The boot is a generous size with space for a couple of pushchairs, big shopping trips or family holiday luggage. Fold down the back seats and there’s space for much larger, bulkier items, which should be easy to load thanks to the big, square boot opening.
The Grandland is the largest of Vauxhall’s three-model SUV range, which also includes the Crossland and the Mokka. Compared to Vauxhall hatchbacks, the Grandland is about 10cm (nearly 4 inches) longer than the Astra.
The Grandland hasn’t been assessed by safety organisation Euro NCAP, however, the older, very similar Grandland X was awarded its full five-star rating. Standard driver safety features include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, road-sign recognition and a driver-attention monitor.
The Grandland is available with plug-in hybrid power. According to official figures, this Grandland Hybrid-e model can give average fuel economy of up to 192mpg with a fully charged battery, which will give you an electric-only range of up to 39 miles. CO2 emissions are very low at 31g/km, so it could save you money in lower Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) charges.
