The Porsche Macan is a mid-size premium SUV that genuinely feels like a sports car to drive. You can have enormous fun driving it yet it’s also quiet and comfortable, and a convenient size for nipping around town. The beautifully made interior feels luxurious and has enough passenger and boot space to fulfil the needs of most families. It’s even surprisingly capable of driving off-road. There truly are few better all-rounders.
The Macan has been updated several times since it went on sale in 2014, most recently in 2021, when it received new exterior styling details including a different front bumper and lights as well as a new dashboard with a bigger touchscreen and fewer buttons.
There’s a choice of petrol engines, which give acceleration ranging from rapid to really very fast indeed. There’s also a diesel (sold until 2018) that gives a great blend of performance and economy and is ideal for very long journeys. All models have an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.
There are four trim packages – Macan, Macan S, Macan GTS and Macan Turbo – which each reflect an increase in performance and equipment.
All Macan models come equipped with climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth and DAB radio. Many also have sat nav, leather seats and smartphone connectivity. New Macans are available with an extensive range of options, including a sunroof, a powerful Bose stereo, air suspension and adaptive cruise control. There’s also the Sport Chrono Pack which adds extras designed to make the Macan feel even sportier. You can identify it by the analogue dashboard clock.
For a high-performance SUV, the Macan is surprisingly fuel efficient. According to official figures, petrol models give 25-39mpg on average and the diesel gives 46mpg. Road tax is in the higher bands and insurance can be costly, especially on high-spec models, but that’s true of any Porsche. It costs more than some rivals, but you may feel its enjoyable driving experience and the prestige of the Porsche brand are worth it.
Other mid-size SUVs include the BMW X3, Range Rover Velar and Mercedes-Benz GLC. There are more practical, better-value options than the Macan but none can match its blend of practicality, luxury and driving fun.
