Why buy the MG3?

The MG3 is a small hatchback that proves style doesn’t have to be costly. There’s substance behind the looks too, with a generous helping of equipment as standard (particularly in the top-of-the-range mode), a spacious interior and a fun driving experience.

MG3 range and updates

The MG3 has been sold new since 2013, and was updated in 2018 with a new dashboard, a larger front grille and bigger headlights. At the same time, MG upgraded the on-board tech and renamed the trim levels.

The range is easy to understand because the MG3 is only available as a practical five-door hatchback with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a manual gearbox. There’s more choice in other areas, though. For instance, you can find many MG3s finished in bold colour combinations – yellow is a popular choice – and some models have distinctive graphics and sporty-looking bodykits.

You can also choose from several trim levels. On models sold new since 2018, they’re named Explore, Excite and Exclusive. Older ones include the entry-point 3Time, popular 3Form (also available in sporty-looking 3Form Sport guise) and the top-of-the-range 3Style.

MG3 tech and features

Standard features on entry-level MG3 Explore models include front and rear electric windows, a radio with USB connection and Bluetooth. Excite models add a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay connectivity and DAB radio, as well as air con and rear parking sensors. Top-of-the-range Exclusive models also have cruise control and a reversing camera. If you want built-in sat-nav, look for Exclusive Nav models.
Older MG3 models, sold new from 2013 to 2018, have broadly similar features, with the exception of the infotainment system. Instead, most models have a smartphone dock on the dashboard, which allows you to use music and navigation apps without running down the battery.

MG3 running costs and value

All MG3 models have a 1.5-litre petrol engine which can give you an average fuel economy of 42-48mpg, according to official figures. That’s fairly average for this type of car, although you can find rivals that are more efficient. However, the MG’s low price can help to offset the extra fuel cost. Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) and insurance are reasonable for this type of car.

Other low-cost small hatchbacks like the MG3 include the Dacia Sandero and the Suzuki Baleno. Compared to the MG, the Dacia is more comfortable and the Suzuki is more practical, but the MG is more stylish, more fun to drive and great value.

How practical is the MG3?

The MG3 is surprisingly roomy for a small car. You’ll fit four adults reasonably comfortably and children have space to stretch out in the back seats. There are two sets of Isofix child-seat mounts and the car’s relatively tall, five-door body makes helping small children into the back easier than with some other small hatchbacks. The boot is a decent size for this type of car with space to accommodate your typical weekly shop or luggage for a short holiday. The boot becomes much larger if you fold down the back seats.

How does the MG3 compare with other MG models?

The MG3 is the smallest car MG makes. The brand’s other two petrol cars are both SUVs, called the ZS and HS. MG also makes two electric cars, called the ZS EV and MG5 estate.

How safe is the MG3?

Safety organisation Euro NCAP gave the MG3 a three-star rating out of a possible five. Standard safety features include six airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control and hill start assist, though it lacks some of the more advanced safety features, like automatic emergency braking, that you’ll find in its rivals.
