Why buy the Mercedes-Benz EQA?

The Mercedes-Benz EQA is an electric, mid-size SUV that’s ideal if you want a zero-emission family car with a touch of luxury. The interior looks really impressive with its huge digital displays; there are lots of standard features and everything feels very well made. It also has a long enough range to cover most people’s weekly driving or longer trips when needed.

The EQA has been sold since 2021 when it was launched as the electric version of Mercedes’ popular petrol/diesel/hybrid GLA SUV. You can easily tell the EQA and GLA apart by their different front grilles and lights. Mercedes uses the letters EQ to mark out all of its electric cars.

Several models are available – the EQA 250, 300 and 350. The number indicates how much power the car has and therefore how quickly it accelerates. All three models feel nippy around town and will get you up to motorway speeds quickly. Four-wheel drive is standard on some 300 models and all 350 models, which could be useful if you live in an area where the roads can be slick with mud or ice.

The trim levels are called Sport and AMG Line. The latter has bigger wheels and sporty-looking additions to the bodywork, with deeper bumpers and a rear spoiler.

All EQA models have two widescreen digital displays – one that shows vehicle information to the driver and one that’s an infotainment touchscreen. It’s an impressive-looking set-up that’s easy to use and packed with features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for your smartphone, sat nav and DAB radio. You can control some features with simple voice commands, and you also get cruise control, climate control and heated seats.

Whichever EQA model you choose, it’ll have a range of up to 263 miles on a fully charged battery, according to official figures. Recharging the battery from 10% capacity with an 11kW home wallbox charger takes around six hours, while a 10-80% recharge from a 100kW public charger takes about half an hour. The EQA costs more to buy than some rivals, but it does give you extra quality and tech.

How practical is the Mercedes-Benz EQA?

You’ll easily fit four adults in the EQA, and headroom is particularly good, which is a bonus if you’re more than six-feet tall. On that basis, most families with two children should have all the space they need and there’s even room for the occasional fifth passenger in the middle back seat. The boot is on the small side for a mid-size SUV because the battery takes up quite a lot of space. But it’s still about the same size boot as in most similar-sized hatchbacks, so it’ll hold lots of shopping and school bags.
