Used Mercedes-Benz cars buying guide
Mercedes-Benz builds some of the most desirable cars on the road. The company is known for cars that are both stylish and well-built, so a Mercedes-Benz makes a lot of sense on the used car market.
There’s a Mercedes-Benz for everyone, from practical hatchbacks to family-friendly SUVs, and classy coupes to sophisticated four-door saloons. If you’re after an SUV, look no further than this German brand, because no manufacturer offers a broader range of the most fashionable body style on the market.
Along with a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid models, Mercedes-Benz offers an increasing number of pure-electric cars.
Which used Mercedes-Benz cars are for sale?
Mercedes-Benz offers something within every category of car, so whether you’re after a hatchback, saloon, estate, SUV, convertible, coupe or MPV, you’ll almost certainly find the right used car for you.
The smallest Mercedes-Benz is also the most popular, with the A-Class making regular appearances in the best-sellers chart. This means there’s always a good selection to choose from. Meanwhile, the mid-size C-Class and larger E-Class are available as saloon or estate models.
Its pure-electric cars are sold under the E brand, from the EQA compact hatchback to the EQV MPV, plus a range of models in between.
The Mercedes-Benz range of SUVs include the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE and GLS, plus the seriously plush and capable G-Class.
What are the most popular Mercedes-Benz models?
Mercedes-Benz A-Class
The A-Class is the most affordable way to enjoy the full Mercedes-Benz experience. Whether you opt for the practical hatchback or the stylish four-door saloon, you’ll have lots of trim levels to choose from, including the popular AMG Line. The latest A-Class has been on sale new since 2018, replacing a version that was introduced in 2013.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is another popular model. It’s available as a four-door saloon or five-door estate, although stylish convertible and coupe versions were available new until 2023. Many used C-Class cars are powered by a diesel engine, although petrol and plug-in hybrid versions are available.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a large four-door saloon and five-door estate that’s extremely spacious inside and comes with lots of features included as standard. The surprisingly practical coupe and convertible styles were replaced by the CLE Coupe and CLE Cabriolet models in 2023.
Mercedes-Benz CLA
The Mercedes-Benz CLA combines the practicality of a four-door saloon with the style of a coupe. Although it looks very similar to the A-Class saloon, it has different suspension for a sportier drive and a sleeker look overall. The CLA Shooting Brake is the estate version of the CLA.
Mercedes-Benz GLA
The GLA is the smallest and most affordable Mercedes-Benz SUV. The current version was introduced in 2020, replacing the GLA that was on sale new from 2014 until 2020. It’s essentially an A-Class with a raised ride height and more-rugged styling, and gives you the option of high-performance GLA35 and GLA45 versions.
Which Mercedes-Benz models are SUVs?
The Mercedes-Benz models that are SUVs include the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLC Coupe, GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS and G-Class. If you spot an SUV with an E at the front of its name – such as the EQA, EQB, EQE SUV or EQS SUV – it means it’s a pure-electric model.
The GLA is the ideal SUV if you’re after something compact and affordable, while the GLC and GLE are great for a growing family. Indeed, the GLE comes with seven seats, unless you choose the five-seat plug-in hybrid version. Alternatively, check out the GLB, which is more affordable than the GLC yet comes with seven seats as standard.
You’ll also spot Coupe versions of the GLC and GLE. These models sacrifice a little boot space and rear headroom in exchange for enhanced styling, more equipment included as standard and a sportier driving experience.

Used Mercedes-Benz cars FAQs
When was Mercedes-Benz founded?
Mercedes-Benz was founded in 1926 as Daimler-Benz AG by Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek. But its origins go back to 1886, when Karl Benz applied for a patent on his ‘vehicle powered by a gas engine’ – the Benz Patent-Motorwagen is widely considered to represent the birth of the car itself.
Where are Mercedes-Benz cars made?
Most Mercedes-Benz cars are still made in Germany. The brand has factories in the German towns and cities of Bremen, Rastatt and Sindelfingen, although it also builds cars in China, Hungary, South Africa and the United States and it produces engines in factories across Europe.
What does AMG stand for in Mercedes models?
AMG stands for Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, the company established in 1967 to build race cars based on standard Mercedes-Benz cars. Later, AMG became part of Mercedes-Benz, with Mercedes-AMG becoming a standalone brand focused on building some of the fastest hatchbacks, saloons, estates and sports cars.
AMG Line is a trim level that includes interior and styling upgrades for standard Mercedes-Benz cars. In most cases, there are no performance upgrades, so you can take advantage of its lower running costs.
What does BlueTEC mean on a Mercedes-Benz?
BlueTEC is a Mercedes-Benz name for diesel engines equipped with technology designed to reduce emissions. At its heart is AdBlue, a liquid that is injected into the exhaust system to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions.
What does 4Matic mean on a Mercedes-Benz?
4Matic – also known as 4MATIC – is the name used by Mercedes-Benz for its four-wheel drive system. Instead of just sending power to the front or rear wheels, 4Matic sends power from the engine to all four wheels, which can help to stop them spinning in slippery conditions or when pulling away quickly.
