Land Rover is a British car brand known for blending off-road excellence with luxury. You’ll find lots of used Land Rover cars for sale, from smaller models like the Range Rover Evoque and family SUVs like the Discovery Sport to off-road machines like the Defender and up-market all-rounders like the Range Rover.
Land Rover has a reputation for comfort and top off-road technology. Most of its cars are powered by petrol or diesel engines, but in recent years the company has offered more electrified options that promise lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Several models are available as plug-in hybrids and many new Land Rovers have mild-hybrid technology. All-electric models are due to be introduced in 2024.
You’ll find a wide variety of used Land Rover cars for sale. While no Land Rovers are particularly small, the more compact models are the Range Rover Evoque and the shortest version of the Defender, which is called the Defender 90.
Larger models include the Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Velar, as well as the mid-range Defender model, called the Defender 110. Then there are the really big ones – the Discovery, the Range Rover Sport, the Defender 130 and the Range Rover, which is also available in an even longer-wheelbase version.
There are no pure electric Land Rovers yet, but they’re coming – an all-electric Range Rover is expected in 2024. Most new Land Rovers have mild-hybrid technology alongside their diesel or petrol engines to help reduce emissions.
There are many plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models available – the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport PHEV models have particularly impressive electric-only ranges of up to 74 miles with a fully charged battery, according to official figures. There are also plug-in versions of the Range Rover Velar, the Range Rover Evoque, the Discovery Sport and the Defender, with battery ranges of between 31 and 40 miles depending on the model.
The Range Rover Evoque is Land Rover’s smallest model. It’s also the most popular. It’s comfortable, good to drive on-road and, in four-wheel-drive form, probably the most capable off-road car of this size that you can buy. Front-wheel-drive models are also available.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a mid-size SUV that makes a great family car. It’s slightly larger than the Range Rover Evoque although it’s shorter than two of its key rivals – those being the Audi A5 and BMW X3. All versions are roomy and well-equipped and most (though not all) have four-wheel drive.
The Range Rover Velar is the sleekest model Land Rover makes, with a less-boxy shape. Slotting into the size gap between the smaller Range Rover Evoque and the larger Range Rover Sport, it’s easily big enough to be a family car and, as you’d expect, it’s excellent off-road.
The Range Rover Sport is a big SUV that’s a rival for cars such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. While some versions are sporty, it’s essentially a slightly smaller, less-expensive version of the full-size Range Rover. It’s powerful and packed with features and you’ll find used versions for sale with either five or seven seats.
The Land Rover Discovery is a great all-rounder, with lots of comfort and space, excellent off-road performance and strong towing performance. It has a luxurious seven-seat interior and you have a choice of smooth and powerful petrol and diesel engines, as well as the option of air suspension for an even more comfortable ride.
All Land Rovers are SUVs. Land Rover made its name as an off-road brand and while it has branched out into luxurious, family cars, every model it makes is very capable away from the tarmac.

Land Rover is part of the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) parent company that’s owned by the India-based firm Tata Motors. Tata bought JLR from Ford in 2008, acquiring the Jaguar brand at the same time. In the past, Land Rover has been owned by BMW, the Rover Group and British Leyland.
Most Land Rover cars sold in the UK are made here. The Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar are built in Solihull, while the Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque are made in Halewood on the outskirts of Liverpool. The Discovery and the latest Defender model are made in Slovakia.
There’s often confusion between the Land Rover and Range Rover names. Land Rover is the name of the manufacturer, while Range Rover is a name given to several models, each inspired by the original Range Rover car. These include the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque.
The most affordable new Land Rover Defender is, as of early 2024, the Defender Hardtop, essentially a van version of the car. It starts at just over £50,000. The most affordable passenger Defender is the Defender 90, which starts at just over £57,000, while the Defender 110 starts at just over £63,000 and prices for the Defender 130 start from about £74,000.
The latest long-wheelbase Range Rover is the only Range Rover model with the option of seven seats, although the Range Rover Sport 2013-2022 model was also offered with an optional extra row of seats (five were fitted as standard).
