The Hyundai i20 is a smart-looking supermini with a spacious and comfortable interior and a lot of equipment as standard. It’s relaxing to drive and excellent value for money. Running costs are low and it comes with a five-year warranty from new that transfers to future owners.
The latest Hyundai i20, launched in 2020, replaced the version that was sold new from 2015. The 2015 version is available as a five-door or three-door hatchback (the three-door is badged ‘Coupe’). There’s also the i20 Active, which adds SUV styling and higher ground clearance to the five-door. The 2020 version is completely new, with angular styling and a more high-tech interior. It’s also a bit bigger and only available with five doors.
The 2015 version is available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, with a manual or automatic gearbox. The 1.0-litre ‘T-GDi’ petrol engine is the best option if you regularly do long journeys. But all the engines are quiet and smooth, which makes for a relaxing drive. In the 2020 version, most models have a petrol engine with a mild-hybrid system that improves fuel efficiency. Again, manual and automatic gearboxes are available. There’s a high-performance i20N, as well.
You have many trim levels to choose from and all come well equipped, especially the top-of-the-range Premium.
The i20 models sold from 2018 have a touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio and smartphone connectivity. High-spec Premium models have features you might not expect in a supermini such as sat nav, climate control and cruise control. The latest version i20 has even more tech, including a large display screen for the driver and an equally large touchscreen infotainment system.
Running costs for the i20 are very low, even compared with many other small hatchbacks. According to official figures, the 2015 version gives average fuel economy of 51-62mpg with a petrol engine and 68-88mpg with a diesel engine. The latest version’s mild-hybrid-assisted petrol engine can give up to 55mpg.The i20 is excellent value for money, giving you a lot of space and equipment for a lower cost than many other superminis.
The i20 has a lot of rivals, including the Nissan Micra, the Suzuki Swift and the Toyota Yaris. Among them, the i20 stands out for its excellent value, spacious interior and comfortable drive.
The i20 is among the most practical and versatile superminis. Both the 2015 and 2020 versions have loads of space, especially in the back seats. Even your taller passengers should be comfortable enough for a long journey. The boot is usefully large, with space for a couple of large suitcases or a heavy-duty shopping trip. And the back seats fold down to create even more room. The 2020 version is a bit longer and wider and is noticeably more spacious.
The 2015 version of the i20 was given a four-star rating by safety organisation Euro NCAP. It said it provided good protection in a crash, but the low-spec model it tested lacked some driver safety systems that are fitted to higher-spec models. However, all models sold from 2018 have a rear-view camera, automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. At the time of writing, the 2020 version hadn’t been given a rating but it comes with a lot of safety systems as standard.
