Dacia is a Romania-based car brand known for making some of the most cost-effective cars around. Most of its models are much cheaper than equivalent cars.
Founded in 1966, Dacia is owned by Renault and based in Bucharest. It has a relatively small range of cars, from family hatchbacks to a large seven-seater SUV.
Dacia’s range starts with the Sandero, which comes in hatchback and Sandero Stepway crossover forms. It’s about the same size as a Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa.
The Jogger is a seven-seat SUV-like estate car with the option of hybrid power, while the Duster is a more rugged SUV that gives you lots of practicality for the money. Although they aren’t made anymore, you’ll also find used examples of the Logan MCV estate car and the more SUV-like Logan MCV Stepway.
The Dacia Jogger seven-seater has been available new with a full-hybrid system since 2023, while the Spring hatchback, on sale elsewhere in Europe since 2021, will be the brand’s first all-electric car when it comes to the UK in summer 2024.
A rugged and versatile SUV, the Duster is a practical choice for around-town and motorway driving, but it can also hold its own off-road. While four-wheel-drive models excel on tough terrain, there are also more fuel-efficient front-wheel-drive models available.
Dacia’s small hatchback sums up the brand as a whole. It’s simple, functional and considerably more affordable than a lot of its peers, giving you a no-nonsense driving experience. The latest model, sold new from 2020, is a big step up from the first version, with a more modern look and feel and more up-to-date tech.
The Sandero Stepway takes the Sandero hatchback and gives it an SUV makeover, raising the ride height and giving it more rugged looks. It focuses on the essentials, with decent tech, a low price, low running costs and good space inside. The latest model was introduced in 2021.
A brilliant seven-seat family car, the Dacia Jogger is affordable, very spacious and available with petrol or full-hybrid power. So big is the price difference between it and other similar cars – such as the Skoda Kodiaq or the Kia Sorento – that it’s hard to say they’re actually rivals.
Available as an estate car or as a raised-up crossover, the Logan MCV and MCV Stepway are some of Dacia’s older models but they remain great value for money, with huge boots and a comfortable ride for a bargain price.
Dacia has one ‘proper’ SUV in the form of the Duster, which comes with either front- or four-wheel drive and can tackle off-road terrain. The seven-seat Jogger is more of a crossover, but it’s very spacious. The same is true of the Sandero Stepway and Logan MCV Stepway, which are essentially raised-up hatchbacks.
