If you're in the market for a four-door variant of the flagship sports car, then a used BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a great choice. While the front end is nearly identical to the regular 8 Series, the Gran Coupe has a style that's all its own, as well as increased practicality. With a longer wheelbase and four doors, it's far more suited to family life.
The newest BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe lineup consists of three petrol engines. There are also diesel examples on the used market. All have an 8-speed automatic gearbox and the choice between rear- or xDrive all-wheel drive.
The five-seat layout of the Gran Coupe offers more room for passengers to spread out and relax, making it suitable for executive travel.
The most efficient engine is the diesel variant, which has a rating of up to 45.6mpg. However, the base 840i engine has proven popular among 8 Series Gran Coupe owners as it is cheaper to buy.
There are three trims on offer: Standard, M Sport and the xDrive with the M package. M models are available as either the M850i or M8, providing more speed and enhanced features throughout the cabin. The mid-range M Sport is the most popular with 8 Series Gran Coupe drivers.
Look out for models with adaptive M suspension if you want the smoothest, most comfortable ride. Heated rear seats, a head-up display or premium sound systems can also be found on used 8 Series Gran Coupe examples.
The five seater offers a spacious cabin for up to four adults. The rear middle seat is better suited for someone smaller, and the armrest can be put down between the two passengers. The boot space is ample, which also makes 8 Series Gran Coupe a great family option.
Since its introduction, the 8 Series Gran Coupe hasn't been available with a hybrid powertrain. BMW has only offered petrol and diesel variants with a heavy focus on balancing performance with efficiency.
All 8 Series Gran Coupe models have an 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW has never offered a manual gearbox variant with the lineup.
BMW built the 8 Series Gran Coupe with four-wheel drive, which is a benefit to anyone driving in bad weather. Other models feature rear-wheel drive as standard.
