BMW 2 Series buying guide
Why buy the BMW 2 Series?
The BMW 2 Series is a compact, four-seat coupe or convertible that offers the comfort, tech and premium feel of BMW’s saloon cars. It’s reasonably practical and cost-effective to run so you could use it as your everyday car – unlike some coupes or convertibles. It’s more fun to drive than most rivals and the high-performance models in particular can make every journey something to look forward to.
BMW 2 Series range and updates
The 2 Series Coupe and Convertible have been sold since 2014, when they replaced similar 1 Series models. They’re part of the wider BMW 2 Series range that also includes the Active Tourer and Gran Tourer MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles, also known as people-carriers) and the Gran Coupe saloon.
Some models have four-wheel drive and you can choose from lots of different petrol and diesel engines, each available with a manual or automatic gearbox. The diesels give a good balance of performance and economy, which is great if you make lots of long journeys, though the petrol engines are also very efficient. Whichever you choose, you’ll enjoy responsive, rapid acceleration. If you want something even faster you should look at the powerful M235i and M240i models or the top-of-the-range M2, which delivers a lot more power but compromises on comfort.
Four trim levels are available – SE, Sport, Luxury and M Sport – all of which are very well equipped. M Sport, which tends to be the most popular, has a sportier look than the other trims.
BMW 2 Series tech and features
All 2 Series models are well equipped, with an infotainment system that features DAB radio and Bluetooth, air con, cruise control and parking sensors. You’ll get sat nav in most models, while high-spec versions give you extra features such as heated leather seats, a more powerful stereo and adaptive cruise control. Convertibles have an electrically folding roof.
BMW 2 Series running costs and value
The 2 Series is surprisingly fuel-efficient for a sporty car. According to official average figures, petrol models can give 36-52mpg and diesels can give 52-64mpg, depending on which engine/gearbox combination is fitted. That efficiency means your Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) is relatively low, as are insurance premiums.
BMW 2 Series vs rivals
The 2 Series has few direct rivals. However, similar coupes include the Volkswagen Scirocco, while premium convertible rivals include the Audi A3 Cabriolet. You might also want to consider sports cars such as the Audi TT and Toyota GT86. The 2 Series gives you a great combination of a practical interior with user-friendly tech, low running costs and a fun driving experience.
BMW 2 Series common questions
How practical is the BMW 2 Series?
The 2 Series is unusual for a small coupe or convertible in that it has room for four adults. Tall people might find the back-seat headroom a bit tight, but children will have plenty of space. Helpfully, there are two sets of Isofix child seat mounts for smaller children. The boot is big enough for a week’s worth of holiday luggage but its relatively small opening and irregular shape mean you might find soft bags are easier to pack in than suitcases. The back seats fold down if you need to carry longer loads.
How does the BMW 2 Series compare with other BMW models?
The 2 Series is the smallest of BMW’s coupe/convertible cars, sitting below the 4 Series and 8 Series in the range (the 6 Series is an older model that was replaced by the 8 Series). Compared with BMW’s other cars, the 2 Series falls between the 1 Series hatchback and 3 Series saloon in size.
How safe is the BMW 2 Series?
The 2 Series hasn’t been assessed by safety organisation Euro NCAP, but it’s based on other BMW cars that were awarded a full five-star rating, so it should protect the driver and passengers similarly well in an accident. Most models have lots of driver-safety features including front-collision warning, automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning.
