Ashorne0 Previous Owners, This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Supercar Fest 2026 on Saturday the 16th of May, Sywell Aerodrome, Sywell, Northampton, NN6 0BN. , The 300 SEL 6.3 remains one of the great Qcars of its era, combining imposing W109 presence with the formidable 6.3litre M100 V8. Period performance was remarkable, with 0 to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 220km/h, figures confirmed by MercedesBenzs own archive. Its reputation was such that Steve McQueen famously owned one, having reportedly been captivated by the models autobahn pace after being overtaken at high speed in his 911S.This lefthand drive example was acquired by our vendors in Berlin in 2016 from a respected collector and has formed part of their ownership for the last decade. The history file indicates a small number of careful keepers and accompanies the car with its original service books, handbooks and photographic restoration records.Importantly, the file also documents substantial restoration work by HK Engineering, the noted German marque specialists best known internationally for their expertise with the MercedesBenz 300 SL. HK Engineering states that it has specialised in the restoration and maintenance of these cars since 1984 and is widely regarded for the quality of its workmanship. In this instance, their accompanying summary records that the car had previously been well restored in 2001 before undergoing a further mechanical restoration over the course of 2012 and 2013.That report notes that the bodyshell was found to be in excellent order, with the underside described at the time in particularly strong terms, while ageing mechanical and cosmetic components were addressed as required. The car was reportedly dismantled extensively, with the engine and gearbox removed, bare metal areas sodablasted, seals renewed and numerous trim items, brightwork, lights and fittings removed, restored and refitted. The engine itself was dismantled, cleaned and rebuilt with replacement seals, hoses and associated components as necessary. The interior was retained in largely original form, while the car was refinished in Anthrazitgraumetallic, replacing its original brown. The scale of this work is reflected in the accompanying documentation and would represent a substantial undertaking to replicate today. As a result, this 6.3 presents as an especially wellprepared and welldocumented example of one of MercedesBenz most important postwar saloons. Sitting correctly on its air suspension and supported by a detailed history file, it is a car that should appeal to collectors who value specialist restoration, usability and one of the most charismatic fast saloons of the period.
