This lot will be auctioned via Historics Classic and Sportscar Auctioneers at The Pace of Autumn; Ascot Racecourse sale on Saturday 20th September. Very well maintained. Factory hardtop included. These fabulous and popular models were launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1985, the 420 SL convertible retained its predecessors long-running Type 107 bodyshell virtually unchanged. The V8 engined newcomer supplanted the outgoing 380 SL model and was produced alongside the outwardly similar 300 SL six. Its power unit was an enlarged and improved version of the existing 3.8 litre overhead cam Type M116 V8. The running gear followed Mercedes-Benzs established pattern, comprising of independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, while a new five-speed manual gearbox was offered alongside the existing four-speed automatic transmission. A mere 2,148 examples of this luxuriously equipped limited edition model were made between 1985 and 1989.Reported by the vendor to run and drive very well, the 420 SL on offer here was first registered on 1st August 1987. Having had over £20,000 spent on maintenance and repair, in the supplied history files invoices for work includes a full respray, some new chrome and new wings. The timing chain was replaced and almost £10,000 of bills show the notorious rust in the bulkhead has been repaired. Sold with a freshly issued and advisory clear MoT test certificate, the car had previously been regularly serviced and maintained by the West London classic Mercedes-Benz specialist BS Garages in Notting Hill. They also replaced the rear wheel arches. As well as BS Garages, the car had also been looked after by Schmitt Motors and Mercedes-Benz main dealers. The soft-top was replaced for a new one during the previous ownership and still presents beautifully. The bill of sale from Rose & Young Mercedes main dealer from 1997 is also included, with the mileage at the time being 55,000.Supplied with a V5C registration document and a factory hardtop, this wonderful 420 SL has been well cared for and offers Mercedes-Benzs most elegant motoring experience.
