This lot will be auctioned via Historics Classic and Sportscar Auctioneers at The Pace of Autumn; Ascot Racecourse sale on Saturday 20th September. Very low mileage late R129 model. Well-maintained example with major recent works. Part of a private collection. Mercedes service history. Unveiled at the March 1969 Geneva Motor Show, the new Mercedes-Benz R129 Series SL range was beautifully engineered. Based around a two-door monocoque bodyshell, its sophisticated, all-round independent suspension (double-wishbone front/five-link rear) was augmented by a host of active and passive safety features. Including electronic stability control, ventilated ABS disc brakes, adaptive-damping shock absorbers, front airbags and an integral safety rollover bar that is deployed in less than a third of a second, if the car sensed an impending collision Suitable cosseting, the convertibles impeccably built cabin consisted of a fully automated power hood and featured such advancements as memory seats, electric windows and mirrors and adjustable steering column. Yet lurking beneath all the luxury and refinement is a performance orientated sportscar.First registered on 6th March 2002, this well specified SL 280 is presented in silver with a contrasting exclusive black leather interior and light burr walnut wood trim. The price new for this example was £56,000 but the original vendor optioned it with a Panoramic hardtop, 18 AMG wheels, anti-glare review view mirror and CD changer on top of the leather and burr walnut trim equating to a further £6,860 in options.Following a full vehicle health check the car underwent a service with full major works to protect its underside and preserve its condition, with the vendor spending in excess of £5,000 including bearings, rear brake hoses, ball joint gaiters, front and rear pads, gearbox oils, four wheel geometry, zinc plating, and a full vapour blast of engine and sump, suspensions, rear subframe, exhaust and brake calipers. The vendor reports that all the electronics work as expected, we are informed that it drives very well and will be driven to the auction.Offered with a desirable hardtop, two original keys and remote fobs, book pack, service records including booklet, numerous bills and receipts for the maintenance and it will be supplied with new MoT test certificate. This wonderful modern classic is well specified and in good condition. Ideal for classic summer motoring with a few modern creature comforts such as air conditioning and electric heated seats.
