The Jaguar I-Pace is a car that truly shook up the electric vehicle market when it launched in 2018. It was one of the first premium SUVs from a traditional carmaker to take on Tesla, and it did so with incredible style and substance. It’s a stunningly designed, fully electric car that offers sports car performance, a practical family-sized interior, and a generous real-world driving range. As Jaguar's first-ever electric car, the I-Pace is a hugely impressive achievement. It’s fantastic to drive, packed with technology, and its clever design means it’s far more spacious inside than you might expect. It proves that you don't have to sacrifice style or driving enjoyment to go electric. It’s a desirable and exciting car that just happens to be powered by a battery.
Pros
- Stunning, futuristic design
- Brilliant to drive
- Incredibly spacious and practical interior with amazing performance
Cons
- The ride can feel a bit firm around town
- It's an expensive car to buy
- Infotainment system can take some getting used to
Interior

Dashboard & tech
The interior of the I-Pace feels just as futuristic as the exterior. The standout feature is Jaguar's dual-screen 'Touch Pro Duo' system, which dominates the centre console. The top screen handles navigation and media, while the lower screen looks after climate control and other vehicle settings. It creates a very modern, high-tech feel, although it can take a bit of time to get used to operating everything via a touchscreen.
The rest of the cabin is beautifully finished with high-quality materials, including leather, suede, and cool metal trims. What's refreshing is that while it feels modern, it also feels like a proper Jaguar. The build quality is superb, creating a luxurious and comfortable environment for both the driver and passengers.
Comfort
The I-Pace offers a comfortable and refined driving experience. The sports seats are supportive and hold you in place well, making them great for long journeys. Because it's an electric car, it's incredibly quiet and relaxing to drive, with no engine noise to disturb the peace.
The only slight downside is that the ride can feel a little firm at low speeds, especially on models with larger alloy wheels. You tend to feel bumps in the road a bit more than in some rivals. However, as your speed increases, the ride smooths out, and it becomes a brilliant and comfortable motorway cruiser.
Quality
The cabin of the I-Pace is a masterclass in modern luxury. Jaguar has used a fantastic mix of premium materials to create a space that feels genuinely special. Everything you touch, from the steering wheel to the switchgear, has a solid, high-quality feel.
It's a beautifully crafted interior that successfully blends traditional luxury with cutting-edge technology. The fit and finish are excellent, and it feels every bit the premium product you'd expect for the price. It's a car that makes every journey feel like an occasion.
Practicality & boot space

Interior space
This is one of the I-Pace’s secret weapons. Because it was designed from the ground up as an electric car, Jaguar’s designers were able to be very clever with the packaging. With no engine at the front and no transmission tunnel running through the middle of the car, the interior is incredibly spacious.
There's a huge amount of legroom and headroom in the back, and the completely flat floor means that three adults can sit comfortably across the rear bench. It’s far roomier than its exterior dimensions would suggest and works brilliantly as a practical family car.
Boot space
The clever packaging continues when you get to the boot. The I-Pace offers a massive 656 litres of luggage space, which is more than you’ll find in most conventional SUVs of a similar size. It’s a huge, practical boot that will easily swallow a family’s holiday luggage or a couple of sets of golf clubs.
If you fold the rear seats down, this expands to a van-like 1,453 litres. As a bonus, because there's no engine, you also get a small storage area under the bonnet – sometimes called a ‘frunk’ (front trunk) – which is perfect for storing the charging cables.
Driving

Driving experience
The way the I-Pace drives is a real highlight. With the batteries mounted low down in the floor, it has a very low centre of gravity, which means it feels incredibly agile and planted on the road. There’s hardly any body lean when you go around corners, and the steering is quick and precise. It's probably the best-handling electric SUV you can buy.
The instant acceleration is breathtaking. With no gears to change and all the power available instantly, it feels incredibly fast. The only thing that takes some getting used to is the regenerative braking, which slows the car down to help recharge the battery. It allows for 'one-pedal' driving in many situations, but it can feel a bit strong at first until you adjust your driving style.
Performance
All I-Pace models are badged EV400. They come with two electric motors – one powering the front wheels and one powering the rears – which gives the car all-wheel-drive capability. Together, they produce a mighty 394bhp.
This huge amount of power results in sports car-like acceleration. The I-Pace can rocket from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds, which is astonishing for a family SUV. The top speed is limited to 124mph, which is common for electric cars to help preserve the battery range.
Running costs

Range & charging
The I-Pace is fitted with a large 90kWh battery. Officially, this gives it a driving range of up to 292 miles on a single charge. In real-world driving, you can expect to achieve around 250 miles, which is still a very useful amount and more than enough for most people's weekly needs.
Charging the I-Pace at home with a dedicated 7kW wallbox will take around 10-13 hours for a full charge. When you're out and about, you can use a public rapid charger. A 100kW charger can add around 80 miles of range in just 20 minutes, making longer journeys perfectly feasible.
Value for money
The I-Pace is a premium car with a premium price tag, but running costs are incredibly low. Charging with electricity at home is far cheaper than filling a car with petrol or diesel. As a zero-emission vehicle, it’s also exempt from road tax and congestion charges in cities like London. The biggest savings, however, are on the used market, where you can now get all of this style and technology for a significant discount compared to the new price.
Reliability & Warranty
As a relatively new type of vehicle, long-term reliability is still being established, but electric cars have far fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel cars, so there is less to go wrong. Jaguar provides an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the battery from new, which gives great peace of mind when buying a used I-Pace. The rest of the car is covered by a standard three-year warranty.
Safety
Safety features
The Jaguar I-Pace is an incredibly safe car. It achieved a full five-star rating when it was crash-tested by the safety experts at Euro NCAP, with very high scores in all categories.
It comes packed with a generous amount of standard safety equipment. Every model gets adaptive LED headlights, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, and a driver condition monitor that can detect if you’re getting tired. A reversing camera is also standard, which is very helpful. You can also find models with optional extras like a 360-degree camera system and adaptive cruise control for even more assistance.
Trims & Engines
Trim levels
The I-Pace is available in three core trim levels, all of which are very well equipped.
S: The entry-level model still feels very luxurious. It comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, the dual-screen infotainment system, a reversing camera, and a host of safety features.
SE: This mid-range trim adds larger 20-inch alloy wheels, premium LED headlights with a distinctive daytime running light signature, and leather sports seats. It also includes more advanced safety tech like a blind-spot monitor.
HSE: The top-of-the-range model is fully loaded. It gets a different design of 20-inch wheels, even more advanced 'Matrix' LED headlights, premium Windsor leather upholstery, and heated and cooled front seats. It also comes with a premium Meridian sound system and a 360-degree camera.
Powertrain
The choice here is very simple, as all I-Pace models use the same all-electric powertrain.
EV400: This consists of a 90kWh battery and two electric motors that provide all-wheel drive. The system produces a total of 394bhp, delivering instant, powerful acceleration and a real-world range of around 250 miles. It's a fantastic powertrain that delivers both thrilling performance and zero tailpipe emissions.
