Due to experiencing significant vibration when braking I booked my car into Mercedes Benz Glasgow. Road test confirmed the vibration and a vehicle health check found that all brake discs were warped and pads also needed replaced. Due to all parts being under warranty they were replaced free of charge. However this was not initially communicated to me, only when I was asked if I would like to proceed with £1300 of work I asked the question regarding either my approved used one year warranty and parts warranty was I informed the work would be covered. I do wonder what happens when people don't ask the question? Furthermore I was also told that my wheel hubs would be examined when the brakes were stripped off. Once this was carried out I was told that my wheel hubs were corroded. I received a text message. First of all telling me that Mercedes Benz Giffnock(where I purchased the vehicle in January) would not cover the £636 of work under warranty. I was asked how I would like to proceed. When I asked Mercedes Benz Glasgow why Mercedes Benz Giffnock would not cover the work they stated it was due to the fact I'd bought the car in January, which didn't make much sense as the car was still within the 12 month used approved warranty period. I contacted Mercedes Giffnock who informed me that the reason they would not cover the work to repair the corrosion on the wheel hubs Mercedes Glasgow had detailed to them was nothing untoward and the work was not in any way essential. This had not been communicated to me by Mercedes Glasgow. Upon recontacting Mercedes Glasgow to get more information on the issue with the wheel hubs it was all very vague. Getting to the point I asked is this work essential? The reply was, we recommend it. It was then made clear to me that if I had any further issues with my brake discs or pads they would not be covered by a parts warranty because I had not agreed for this recommended non essential work to be carried out. After the discs and pads were replaced I attended Mercedes Benz Glasgow to collect my car. Having had some time to think, I asked some questions about the wheel hubs. Firstly what exactly is the issue with the wheel hubs? I was given the vague answer of they are corroded. I asked how badly are they corroded? At this point a technician was brought over to speak to me. He started to tell me about the brake discs and how they were a specific type etc. I then asked if the wheel hubs were corroded enough that there was a breach of any tolerance levels that would have meant work needed to be carried out? The technician, visibly uncomfortable at this point stated he did not do the hub check. The point I made to him was this, surely if there is any breach of a level of tolerance then these repairs are essential and I would like to know the exact details please. The technician left, when he returned he informed me that all wheel hubs were right on the level of tolerance. Forgive me for thinking this is all a bit questionable. All wheel hubs exactly on the 0.2mm level of tolerance? I then asked if I could see the results of the tests carried out? I was informed that they would be emailed out to me. 72 hrs later and no email detailing the findings has appeared. If the wheel hubs were indeed on the limit of tolerance I'm sure this would have been communicated to me over the telephone prior to the brakes being replaced. If work needs to be done then I have no issues with that. However the overall vague information, the lack of evidence produced when asked, whether it be a simple word document, a video or a photo would lead anyone to question why £636 of work needs carried out. I have to conclude the use of fear of further problems with brakes has been used in an attempt to manipulate me into spending money which I do not need to spend. This has been backed up by a local independent garage who stripped the newly fitted brakes at my expense. They confirm there are no issues with the vehicles wheel hubs. Moral of this story is always ask questions folks. If the need for repairs to be carried out is genuine then there should be no issue producing evidence. I purchased a car from a Mercedes dealership to put my mind at ease that if there were any issues I could trust it to be dealt with complete transparency. I feel this has not been the case and the whole experience has been a frustrating disappointment.
