The style of the car

The Volvo XC90 is a large five-door premium SUV. It’s highly desirable with stunning design and elegant chrome detailing. It also offers huge amounts of space and excellent visibility of the road.

How it drives

The Volvo XC90 is wonderful to drive, with superb comfort and engines that are both economical and responsive. The gearboxes are smooth and there’s a great plug-in hybrid that also delivers the best performance. Clever systems, from lane departure to adaptive cruise control, make long distance driving easy and safe. Parking is easy too thanks to Volvo's Park Assist, which will take care of steering you into the perfect space. The XC90 is also a great SUV for towing. The XC90 is also a great tow car.

The interior

The Volvo XC90 is a large SUV providing space for up to seven people. The third row of seats folds flat into the floor, providing a vast amount of luggage space easily capable of fitting in a number of large suitcases. The interior is one of the best in the business, with stylish elegance, luxury materials and the latest in technology. The large touchscreen infotainment system allows for the minimum number of buttons. Momentum models are well equipped while Inscription is the most luxurious and R-Design provides a sporty look.

Running costs and reliability

Pricing for the Volvo XC90 is similar to the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 and you’ll likely get incredible value as a used buy. The hybrid T8 delivers great fuel consumption figures and the diesels will be very efficient if you do high mileage. Road tax costs are similar to other premium SUVs and insurance can be lower. Servicing and maintenance costs are also about the same as competitors. Reliability is excellent and a five-star Euro NCAP rating underlines the XC90’s incredible safety.

How it compares with similar cars

The Volvo XC90 is a large SUV with space for seven. It’s bigger than the five-seater Volvo XC60 and closer in size to rivals like the Audi Q7 and BMW X5. It’s more than a match for both of these with an elegant and modern Swedish interior as well as the latest in technology and safety systems. It’s a recent winner of Auto Express magazine’s Car of the Year.
