If you want a car that makes every journey as easy and calm as possible, the Volvo XC60 could be for you. It’s comfortable, practical, very well equipped and gives a relaxing driving experience. Its exterior design is subtle and stylish, and it has a similarly minimalist interior. It’s also packed full of the latest safety features, as you’d expect of a Volvo.
The current version of the XC60 has been sold new since 2017 when it replaced a version sold from 2008 to 2017. Both versions are available with a wide selection of petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic gearboxes and front- or four-wheel drive. The current version is also available with mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid power.
There’s a small number of trim and equipment packages to choose from including the luxurious Inscription and the popular, sporty-looking R Design. They’re all very well equipped, with lots of features included as standard.
The current XC60’s interior has a large touchscreen display that controls most of the car’s features, including the entertainment, sat nav, climate control and safety systems. The display is easy to navigate but it does take a bit of getting used to. The latest versions, sold new since 2020, have an Android-based infotainment system that responds to ‘Hey Google’ voice commands, which makes life easier. Other features include heated leather seats and an electrically powered boot lid.
Older XC60 models are also very well equipped, with most having sat nav and leather seats as standard.
Older models of the XC60 can give average fuel economy of 41-49mpg with a diesel engine, and 26-33mpg with a petrol engine, according to official figures. The current version can give 45-47mpg (diesel) and 30-34mpg (petrol). Plug-in hybrid models can give 88-113mpg and have a pure-electric range of between 28 and 33 miles.
Other mid-size premium SUVs include the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. The XC60’s design stands out, especially its sleek interior. It’s one of the more practical cars of this type, extremely comfortable and gives a more relaxing driving experience than some of its rivals.
Both versions of the XC60 have a generous amount of room for four adults, even if they’re on the tall side. Three teenagers should fit on the back seats comfortably, as well. There are two sets of Isofix mounts and some models even have children’s booster seats that fold out of the base of the back seat. Add in a large boot and lots of storage spaces dotted around the interior and the XC60 is a very practical car that’s great for families.
The XC60 is Volvo’s mid-size SUV, slotting into the range between the smaller XC40 and larger XC90. It’s also about the same length as the S60 saloon and V60 estate, which occupy the mid-size slot in Volvo’s range of conventional, non-SUV models.
The older version of the XC60 was one of the safest cars ever tested by safety organisation Euro NCAP when it was launched in 2007, gaining a full five-star rating. The XC60 was then upgraded to meet tougher requirements. The current version has a five-star rating and even more advanced safety features, including additional safety systems designed to reduce the likelihood of a collision happening in the first place.
The latest XC60 is available with mild hybrid (MHEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power. The B4 MHEV has a diesel engine; the B5 and B6 MHEV have petrol engines. They’re all a bit more economical than the non-MHEV models, giving you up to 44mpg with diesel and 37mpg with petrol. The hybrids produce less CO2, as well. The T6 and T8 plug-in hybrid models have official fuel economy of more than 100mpg and a zero-emissions range of up to 32 miles.
