The Peugeot e-208 is one of the best small electric cars available, with enough battery range to cover both weekly commuting and a relatively long-distance trip. It’s more than up to the job of high-speed motorway driving and you’ll find it light and easy to drive around town. On top of that, it looks fantastic, it’s comfortable and it’s reasonably spacious for four. It’s good value too, especially given the interior’s premium-quality feel.
The e-208 is the electric version of the Peugeot 208 small hatchback. The latest 208 has been sold since 2019, when it replaced an older version sold from 2012. The only real difference between the e-208 and petrol and diesel 208 models is that, rather than an engine and fuel tank, the e-208 has batteries and an electric motor.
Every e-208 has the same electric motor and battery pack combination, so your choice is between the various trim and equipment packages. Peugeot calls the most affordable option Active Premium, with the lavishly equipped GT Premium at the top of the range.
Peugeot e-208 tech and features
All e-208 models have a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, air con and parking sensors. High-spec models get extra features including heated front seats and a larger screen with built-in sat nav and reversing camera.
According to official figures, the e-208 has a range of 217 miles with a fully charged battery, although you may find that drops a bit in cold weather and when driving on motorways. A full recharge using a 7kW home charger takes around eight hours. Once you’ve plugged it in, you can use Peugeot’s smartphone app to set when the car charges to take advantage of cheaper electricity tariffs.
You can also recharge at public charging stations at speeds up to 100kW. At that rate, you can add 100 miles of range in under half an hour. Bear in mind, though, that using public chargers can cost significantly more than charging at home. Fortunately, you won’t have to pay Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) and insurance costs are relatively low.
Other electric cars of similar size include the Renault Zoe and Honda E, and you may also want to consider a larger option like the Nissan Leaf or the Volkswagen ID.3. The e-208 doesn’t have the longest battery range and it’s not the most practical of these alternatives, but its range is still long enough to service many people’s needs. It’s also comfortable, looks fantastic and offers great value for money.
The e-208 is a small hatchback with five doors and five seats. That means plenty of space for people of all sizes in the front seats but the back seats are a bit tighter. Children and average-height adults will be comfortable, but legroom will feel snug for taller people. The back doors are quite small, which can make entry a bit trickier if you’re tall or loading children into seats. The boot is a generous size though, and bigger than many competitors’ with room for a week’s worth of food shopping or a few suitcases.
The e-208 is the electric version of the Peugeot 208 hatchback. The first number in the name of Peugeot models indicates their relative size – the other Peugeot hatchback models are the 108, 308 and 508, with the 108 city car being the smallest. Peugeot’s 2008 SUV is roughly the same length and width as the 208.
Safety organisation Euro NCAP gave the petrol-powered 208 a four-star rating out of a possible five. Lots of safety features are fitted as standard including lane-keeping assist, driver-attention monitor, hill-start assist and an SOS call system that automatically alerts emergency services if you have a serious accident.
