The Peugeot 2008 is a small SUV that mixes striking design with a good amount of interior space and a comfortable driving experience. It’s available in a variety of trim levels and several engine choices, including an all-electric model.
The Peugeot 2008 is a compact five-door SUV that’s a rival for cars such as the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur. The previous model (sold new between 2013 and 2019) has a curvier design than the latest model, which was introduced in 2019 and features a sharp-edged, futuristic look. The latest 2008 is also available as a pure-electric model called the Peugeot e-2008.
The Peugeot 2008 trim line-up has been tweaked a number of times. Looking at the latest 2008, the trim levels run from the well-equipped Active (later renamed Active Premium) through Allure/Allure Premium, GT Line, GT and GT Premium, adding extra equipment with each step. Top models include features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control and keyless entry and start-up. The trims on the earlier 2008 were very similar, but with an entry-level Access model. Very early cars had a top-level trim called Feline but it was phased out in 2016.
The engine options consist of small but powerful petrol and diesel engines, as well the pure-electric e-2008.
The latest version of the Peugeot 2008 has features to match its high-tech exterior and interior design, including a digital instrument panel instead of traditional dials and a central touchscreen that measures seven inches across on most models, and 10 inches on higher-spec cars. The system controls the air conditioning and DAB radio, and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone connectivity across the range. Higher-spec models also feature wireless charging for your phone and an interior ambient-lighting system that lets you change colours according to your personal preference.
The earlier 2008 model isn’t quite so high-tech, but all except the basic models have a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, and cars built after a 2016 update have support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Every Peugeot 2008 gives you comparatively low running costs and with the latest model you can choose among fuel-efficient petrol and diesel engines, as well as an all-electric model. All the petrol options are 1.2-litre engines but with various power levels between 99bhp and 153bhp, giving up to 52.6mpg, according to official figures. The diesel model has 99bhp or 108bhp and can return up to 57mpg. The electric e-2008 is available with either a 134bhp or 153bhp motor, with a range of up to 250 miles from a full battery charge depending on the model. The previous model has similarly fuel-efficient petrol and diesel engines, although these were measured using older (less accurate) tests. So while in theory its diesel engine can give you up to 76.3mpg, you’ll probably get less in real-world driving. It does, however, mean that some models are eligible for low or no Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) because of a change in tax rules in 2017.
If you’re considering buying a Peugeot 2008 for sale, you may also want to look at one of the many similar small SUVs you can buy. Of these, the Ford Puma is a tremendous all-rounder, but it’s newer than the 2008 so you won’t find such affordable examples. The Renault Captur and Nissan Juke are especially cost-effective options. Or – if you’re after something more premium and have a slightly larger budget – the Audi Q2 or Volkswagen T-Roc are worth checking out.
