Jeep is best-known for building rugged SUVs and 4x4 models, but today it offers a range of family cars, from cost-effective compact SUVs to a tough 4x4 for serious off-road adventures. Although Jeep is famous for building four-wheel-drive cars, many models are also available with front-wheel drive for better fuel economy. 

The company has been making cars since the 1940s, when it created the famous Willys MA prototype for the US Army. Jeep used its experience in the military to create practical family-friendly cars, with its name becoming a byword for off-road vehicles.

Which used Jeep cars are for sale?

If you’re after a family-friendly car, a Jeep could be a great choice  because its range consists entirely of practical SUVs.

Jeep’s smallest car is also its newest, with the Avenger arriving in 2023 as its first pure-electric car. Then there’s the Renegade compact SUV, which has been on sale since 2015, with the most recent versions available with a choice of hybrid or plug-in hybrid power.

The Compass and Cherokee are mid-size SUVs, while the Wrangler is slightly larger and the Grand Cherokee is much larger again.

What are the most popular Jeep models?

Jeep Avenger

The Avenger arrived in 2023 as Jeep’s first pure-electric car. Along with a choice of three trim levels – Longitude, Altitude or Summit – there are also three power options: petrol, mild-hybrid or pure-electric. 

Jeep Renegade

Unlike many other compact SUVs, the Jeep Renegade can venture further off-road than a dropped kerb. That’s because the Trailhawk version is a proper 4x4. Other front-wheel-drive versions are available if you want lower running costs.

Jeep Compass 

The Compass name returned in 2018 after a nine-year absence. Although petrol and diesel engines were available until 2021, more recent versions offer a choice of mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid power. Again, the Trailhawk version is a proper four-wheel-drive SUV.

Jeep Cherokee 

The Cherokee name has a history dating to 1974, with the first models arriving in the UK in 1993. The most recent version was on sale from 2014 until 2019 and featured distinctive styling, lots of equipment included as standard and a choice of petrol or diesel engines.

Jeep Wrangler 

To many people, the Wrangler is the Jeep. It’s a proper 4x4 for serious adventures, with an ability to take you further off the beaten track than many other cars. You also get a choice of roof – an electric soft-top or a hard-top.

Are there any hybrid or electric Jeep models?

Several Jeep models are available with plug-in hybrid power, combining a petrol engine with an electric motor. These are the Renegade, Compass and Grand Cherokee. Alternatively, the Renegade and Compass are available with mild-hybrid power for improved fuel economy.

The new Avenger goes further by offering a choice of petrol, mild-hybrid or pure-electric power. If you choose the latter, you can expect up to 248 miles of range from a fully charged battery, according to official figures.

Which Jeep models are SUVs?

Every Jeep model is an SUV. The Avenger is a rival for cars such as the Vauxhall Mokka, Peugeot 2008 and Hyundai Kona and offers a choice of petrol, mild-hybrid or pure-electric power. 

Then there’s the Jeep Renegade, which is a rival for compact SUVs such as the Fiat 500X, Renault Captur and Nissan Juke. Unlike many of its rivals, the Renegade is available with four-wheel drive for off-roading.

Next up are the Compass, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, although the Cherokee was discontinued in 2019. The current Grand Cherokee arrived in 2023. Finally, the Wrangler is Jeep’s most famous SUV.
