With new electric cars coming out just about every month, the chances are that this list will soon be out of date. But as of late 2022, the BMW iX and the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV had the longest range – 380 miles on a single charge, according to official figures. Very close behind is the Ford Mustang Mach-E at 379 miles.

Electric SUV buying guide
SUVs are more popular than ever, and so are electric cars. Put the two together and you've got a car that gives you a commanding driving position and no carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. A win-win, right? It’s no surprise, then, to find that there’s a huge demand for electric SUVs, and there are more to choose from than ever before.
What is an SUV?
SUV stands for ‘sports utility vehicle’. The exact definition of the term SUV is a bit hazy but it’s generally applied to any car that has rugged styling and more ground clearance than a hatchback, a saloon or an estate. Some people (and some car brands) use the term ‘crossover’ to mean much the same thing – it’s a case of personal preference, really.

Is an electric SUV right for me?
There are two things to think about if you’re considering buying an electric SUV. The first is whether an electric car is right for you. If you decide that an electric car will suit your lifestyle, driving habits and budget then you’ll want to work out if that car should be an SUV.
SUVs appeal on many levels. Many – even some of the smaller models – offer all the practicality that most families are likely to need. Some people simply prefer the higher seating position of an SUV, which can also make lifting small children into and out of a car easier and help if you have your own mobility issues. The extra weight of an SUV often gives them a higher towing capacity than a hatchback or estate car, so it may be one of the best options if you need to tow a trailer or a caravan.
What types of electric SUV are available?
There’s a wide variety of electric SUVs available, although not quite as wide a choice as there is among petrol and diesel-powered offerings. That said, with new models coming out at a rapid rate, the choice is ever-expanding. The smallest electric SUVs (such as the Mazda MX-30 or the MG ZS EV) are about the same size as a small hatchback while the biggest (such as the BMW iX) are among the largest electric cars you can buy.
There are quite a few cars that blur the boundaries between SUV and hatchback, with sleek styling and a comparatively low roofline. These include the Jaguar I-Pace, the Kia EV6 and the Tesla Model Y.
What are some of the most popular electric SUVs?
MG ZS EV – proof that an electric SUV doesn’t need to cost a fortune. The competitively priced MG has a long warranty and an official battery range of up to 273 miles.
Jaguar I-Pace – a sporty SUV that’s smooth and enjoyable to drive, with a spacious, high-quality interior.
Audi Q4 E-tron – Audi’s mid-size electric SUV has a great infotainment system, a luxurious interior and an official range of up to 321 miles.
Mazda MX-30 – a relatively short battery range doesn’t take away from the MX-30’s charm, which includes affordable prices and a responsive drive.
Tesla Model X – this seven-seat SUV from Tesla is very fast, has a long battery range and so-called Falcon Wing side doors that open upwards.
Common questions about electric SUVs
There are lots of very rapid electric cars, although the fastest ones don’t tend to be SUVs, because they weigh more than hatchbacks, saloons or sports cars. However, the Tesla Model X Plaid is up there with the very fastest cars in the world. Its electric motors give it huge amounts of power and it can accelerate from zero to 60mph in just 2.5 seconds, which is faster than a lot of supercars.
Which electric SUV is best for you will depend on a number of factors, including your budget, lifestyle and driving habits.
Our guide to the best electric SUVs includes both new and used models, so there’s something to suit a range of needs and budgets – from compact, cost-effective models such as the MG ZS EV to large, high-end seven-seaters like the Tesla Model X.
