DS, or DS Automobiles to use its full name, is Citroen’s premium sub-brand. DS models have distinct designs, however, and aim for a more premium look and feel inside and out.
DS’s range of cars includes a compact SUV, a mid-size SUV, a five-door family hatchback and a large four-door saloon. Several power options are available, including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid or pure-electric.
As for the name, DS pays homage to the famous Citroen DS of 1955.
The most popular used DS is the DS 3. It arrived in 2009 as the Citroen DS3, but the Citroen name was removed as part of an update in 2016. To confuse matters, the current model was introduced in 2019 as the DS 3 Crossback, but the Crossback name was removed in 2023. The pure-electric version is known as the DS 3 E-Tense.
The current DS 4 family hatchback arrived in 2021 as a replacement for the old model (2011-2018), which was available in standard and SUV-style Crossback forms. Larger still is the DS 7, formerly the DS 7 Crossback.
The other DS models are the DS 5 luxury hatchback (2012-2018) and the current DS 9 luxury saloon.
DS’s only current pure-electric model is the DS 3 E-Tense. According to official figures, it offers up to 250 miles of range from a fully charged battery.
You’ll find several used DS plug-in hybrid models for sale – these are the DS 3, DS 4, DS 7 and DS 9. Combining a petrol engine and an electric motor, these cars may allow you to complete a typical daily commute in electric mode.
The DS 3 is a compact hatchback, and one of the few available with pure-electric power (E-Tense). A petrol engine is also available, while the old model (2010-2019) offers a choice of petrol or diesel power. Also check out the DS 3 Cabrio and its electric folding roof.
The DS 4 is a posh family hatchback with distinctive styling and an upmarket interior. As well as standard petrol and diesel engines, the DS 4 is available with plug-in hybrid power for up to 41 miles of electric range, according to official figures.
DS 7
The DS 7, formerly known as the DS 7 Crossback, is the largest DS SUV you can buy. As well as smart styling and distinctive styling, the DS 7 offers a choice of petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid power.
DS 9
The DS 9 is a large four-door saloon with plug-in hybrid power for an official electric range of up to 51 miles – if you remember to recharge the battery pack. A four-wheel-drive version is available, and all models feel comfortable and luxurious inside.
Although it could be argued that the DS 3 is an upmarket family hatchback, its raised driving position and styling mean it qualifies as an SUV. Indeed, it was formerly known as the DS 3 Crossback, which is DS branding for an SUV. Its rivals include the Audi Q2, BMW X2 and Mini Countryman.
The DS 7 is the other DS SUV. It’s a rival to family SUVs such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Jaguar F-Pace, with a plug-in hybrid version available for low running costs.
