Vowing to raise the bar a little higher for the high-end luxury SUV class, Bentley offered the Bentayga with unrivalled off-roading capability and even performance. The Bentley Bentayga borrows a piece from all its top-performing rivals, including the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus and Volkswagen Touareg. However, the Bentayga is more refined than the Q7, has better off-roading capability than the Urus and more luxurious than the Touareg. In terms of speed, Bentley power the same V8 engine as the Cayenne, but the Bentayga delivers a quicker 0-62 mph sprint time of 4.5 seconds and a marginally higher top speed of 180 mph.
What should you expect to find in a Bentley Bentayga?
Unlike other models, Bentley packages the Bentayga trim range based on powertrain rather than features. Besides the limited-run Bentayga First Edition, you can choose from 5 trim specs: the Bentayga Hybrid, V8, V8 Design Series, Bentayga W12 and the range-topping Bentayga Speed. However, all trims get premium standard equipment and tech features, such as:
To ensure each Bentayga is unique, Bentley offers several customisation options. For instance, you can opt for a 3-seater bench in the rear instead of the throne-like standard 2-seater configuration. You can also add leather and exquisite veneer finishes to the interior. There are also complete option packs, like the All Terrain and Touring Specification kit, which add:
It's worth noting that the full-featured infotainment system gets a 60 GB hard drive storage system. You can purchase an optional and more powerful 21-channel Naim audio system that includes a 300-watt subwoofer, a pair of super tweeters and 17 surround-sound speakers. Bentley claims that the sound system is the most powerful you can get in a production SUV.
The Bentley Bentayga comes with a refined engine that offers a relaxingly quiet driving experience. It's extremely agile and maintains surprisingly great composure when cornering at high speeds, making it feel like you're driving a smaller SUV. However, you can easily feel road imperfections inside the cabin, especially if you're riding on the larger 22-inch wheels. For this reason, the smaller wheels might be a better choice for you.
You can only choose from 3 different engines options for the Bentayga. The most economical powertrain is the plug-in hybrid, which pairs together a 443 bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with an electric motor. It's the same powertrain as the Porsche Cayenne and records a time of 5.5 seconds to dash from 0-62 mph, with a top speed of 158 mph and an electric range of 24 miles. The 542 bhp V8 is the mid-range engine option, which takes 4.5 seconds to hit 62 mph and maxes out at 180 mph. The most powerful engine is the range-topping 6.0-litre W12, which is a super-refined version of the W12 engine powering the Bentley Continental GT.
The Bentley Bentayga's selectable driving modes include the Bentley, Comfort, Custom and Sport mode. If you don't like messing around with the steering weight or throttle response while driving, you'll find that the default Bentley drive mode is more than sufficient for a poised ride. The Sport mode slightly stiffens the SUV's air springs and activates Bentley's Dynamic Ride Control, resulting in better stability.
The luxurious hand-crafted cabin is the first thing you notice when you slide into the Bentayga. There is a lustrous combination of soft leather, sleek metal inserts, rich wooden trimming and a few quality plastics. You can enjoy an airy feeling while listening to your favourite playlist blasting from the multiple speakers in the cabin, and you can control the audio and sat-nav through the intuitive infotainment screen on the centre console.
The standard 4-seat layout of the Bentley Bentayga offers plenty of room for the driver and the passengers. Going for the roomier 3-person rear seat option doesn't affect the space or comfort either. However, the boot space isn't too impressive, offering just 484 litres of luggage room. However, the powered hands-free tailgate does make it very easy to access.
Although the Bentley Bentayga has never been crash-tested by the Euro NCAP, the safety equipment and advanced technology kits on the Bentley should clear your doubts when it comes to safety. Electronic stability control and 8-airbags are just some of the standard kits that come on board with the newer versions of the Bentayga. In addition, the Bentley shares the underpinnings and many of the same features as the Audi Q7, which earned a 5-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test.
