Iver1 Previous Owner, This Lot will be sold at auction at Symphony of Spring; Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 7th March. Just 800 miles since a twoyear restorationTastefully upgraded in period styleMexican Orange an original 240Z colourThe story of the Zcar begins with the landmark Datsun 240Z, a car that rewrote the sports car rulebook at the close of the 1960s. Sleek, well balanced and powered by a smooth straightsix, it offered genuine performance and everyday usability at an attainable price, quickly winning a huge following, particularly in North America. By 1975 the concept had evolved into the Datsun 280Z, developed primarily for the US market. With its larger 2.8litre fuelinjected engine, the 280Z delivered stronger torque and improved drivability while meeting tightening emissions standards. Although slightly more refined than the earlier cars, it retained the longbonnet, shortdeck stance and engaging character that define the Zs enduring appeal. Today, good examples are increasingly soughtafter as usable and charismatic 1970s classics. This 1976 car was sourced from California and imported to the UK in 2019, where it was treated to a comprehensive, twoyear, bottomup restoration using new parts throughout, with just 800 miles covered since completion. The current keeper acquired the car in 2021 and is understood to be only its second owner. It retains its original 2.8litre engine, paired with the desirable fourspeed manual gearbox, and has reportedly never been driven in the rain, always being garaged. Now tax and MoT exempt, it is understood that just 38 examples are currently registered in the UK, underlining how rarely the 280Z is encountered on British roads.Mechanically, the car has benefited from extensive renewal. The engine received a full gasket set, new timing chain, oil and water pumps, radiator and hoses, together with new ignition components, belts, sensors and filters. A new clutch and slave cylinder have been fitted, along with a starter motor, refurbished alternator and new engine mounts. A full Z Story exhaust system with JDM rear pipe has also been installed. The suspension and subframes were powder coated and fully polybushed, complemented by new springs, dampers, ball joints, track rod ends and wheel bearings. Finished in striking Mexican Orange a colour closely associated with the early Z cars and enhanced with ZG arches, a ducktail spoiler, front air dam, fresh glass and seals, Atara Racing alloys and a discreet Honda wiper motor upgrade, this is a striking and evidently wellrestored example of an increasingly collectable Japanese sports car.
