IverThis Lot will be sold at auction at Symphony of Spring; Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 7th March. Bare metal restoration 2018 to 2024Superb overall conditionThe Mk. I Ford Escort was introduced in the UK at the end of 1967, making its show debut at Brussels Motor Show in January 1968 and replacing the successful long running Anglia. Escorts became successful as a rally car and eventually went on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time. The Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960's and early 1970's; arguably the Escort's greatest victory was in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally being driven by Finnish legend, Hannu Mikkola. This gave rise to the Escort Mexico special edition road versions in honour of the rally car. In addition to the Mexico, the RS1600 was developed which used a Kent engine block with a 16valve Cosworth cylinder head. As well as higher performance engines and sports suspension, these models featured strengthened bodyshells, making them ideal for rallying. Ford also produced an RS2000 model as an alternative to the somewhat temperamental RS1600, featuring a 2.0 litre Pinto engine. This also chalked up some rally and racing victories and preempted the hothatch market as a desirable but affordable performance road car. This superb example was purchased by the present owner in 2018 who then took the car back to bare metal and replaced the front panels (wing sills fitted) and any welding that was need was carried out by a professional restorer. This Escort is fitted with the correct engine for the model but its not the original when it left the factory and the gearbox has been rebuilt. Original parts were used including glass and the restoration was completed in March 2024. Its previous colour was black but is now resplendent in white with blue decals which looks fabulous and sharp! The car comes with a current V5 log book and is AVO Club registered. These are highly desirable and in this condition, it would surely be a head turner at any show. Consigned by James Good
