Powered by beautifully built 1600cc AX block BDA engineType 9 five-speed gearboxThe Ford Escort Mk. I 1600GT was a special South African variant of Fords beloved compact performance car, produced during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Assembled locally by Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, it combined British engineering with a few unique regional touches. Powered by the 1.6 litre Kent crossflow engine, the 1600GT delivered around 84bhp, giving it lively performance for its lightweight frame. It featured upgraded suspension, front disc brakes, and a close-ratio gearbox, elements that made it both nimble on the road and highly competitive in local motorsport. The South African 1600GT was visually distinguished by GT badging, sportier trim, and often came with twin-circle instruments and optional rally-style wheels. Renowned for its durability and simple mechanics, the Escort 1600GT became a favourite among enthusiasts and racers alike, helping cement Fords performance reputation across South Africas vibrant automotive scene. The particular example was completely restored by our vendors uncle in South Africa, who wanted to build something as close as he could to an RS1600, so the original engine was swapped for a beautiful 1600cc BDA engine, this specific BDA looks like a piece of jewellery in the engine bay. The engine is comprised of an AX block, steel crank, Cosworth rods and pistons, a pair of Weber 40 side draught carburettors with custom ram tubes, electronic ignition and a custom 4-2-1 ceramic coated manifold. Power is transferred through a Type 9 five-speed gearbox and the original BorgWarner differential. This Escort has been restored to a very impressive standard, the paintwork and brightwork gleam and the interior has been trimmed to a good standard, with the addition of some period bucket seats. This Escort looks like great value, especially considering the engine alone would likely cost in the region of £20,000 to replicate! Consigned by Fraser Smith
