Auctioned on Saturday 29th November.

This lot will be auctioned via Historics Classic and Sportscar Auctioneers at The Brooklands Velocity; Mercedes-Benz World sale on Saturday 29th November. Barn find project. Offered with cherished plate. Part of the Shamley collection. Like the Triumph 2000 it was developed from, the Triumph Stag was styled by Italian maestro Giovanni Michelotti and featured the monocoque construction, independent suspension, disc/drum brakes, power-assisted rack and pinion steering. All Stags were four-seater convertible coupes but for structural rigidity and to meet new American rollover standards at the time, the Stag required a B-pillar 'roll bar' hoop connected to the windscreen frame by a T-bar. The power plant though, was an all-new OHC, V8 of 3000cc capacity fed by a pair of Stromberg carburettors and the newcomer received a warm reception at the time of launch in 1970, although longevity of the engine proved to be a problem. Most Stags were fitted with a Borg Warner automatic gearbox together with electric windows, power steering and power-assisted brakes fitted as standard. Very desirable, the Stag is well supported through various clubs and specialist suppliers.Originally registered on 3rd February 1976 and presented in Carmine Red with black trim and hood, our vendor found this example stored in a garage with an odometer showing 26,337 miles. He purchased the car with the aim to fully restore it however due to unforeseen circumstances the project never got underway and therefore this example still represents a fabulous opportunity for a restoration project should you wish. Boasting a full matching numbers engine/gearbox and chassis, the condition is commensurate with the year although covered in a layer of dust. The engine does run but it is advised it would require some recommissioning before being driven on the road and thus trailering away from auction is advised. The panel gaps are good and the soft top and interior trim are also good but for a small cut in the rear screen. Offered with the private plate MRX 77P and the V5 registration document, this is a very sound starting point for what could be a fabulous restoration to the much-loved Stag. Consigned by Mathew Priddy
