Desirable Manual GearboxFull Porsche / Porsche Specialist Service HistoryThe 996 generation (1997-2006) marked a new dawn in the history of the 911. The most significant development was the new water-cooled engine, rather than the traditional air-cooled version, but the entire car was overhauled from its predecessor, the 993.Progressively restrictive noise regulations, environmental concerns, and a higher expectation for refinement, made the switch necessary. Other major changes include a completely new platform with more streamlined bodywork, and a re-designed interior. Visually, the new fried egg headlamps replaced the previous bug eye lights and are only present on the 996. The performance characteristics remained superb with reliability at its core. The 996 was another step forward for Porsche, making cars that not only excited existing owners, but appealed to those who wanted a comfortable and practical sports car that could sprint to 60mph in a shade over five seconds. The Targa models now featured a full glass and electronically operated roof, offering, wind in the hair motoring at the touch of a button. This example has benefitted from a full overhaul of the Targa roof system, removing any chance of rainy-day unreliability. The work was carried out by marque specialist Precision Porsche with new wiring, ECU, and motors. The desirable manual gearbox is reported to work faultlessly, and the clutch was replaced 20,000 miles ago. The IMS bearings have been addressed with the first clutch change at 40,000 miles. Among the other work undertaken by the cars current owner, at the Targas most recent service in February, the front suspension arms were replaced, along with a new battery and previously overhauls of the A/C system with new condensers and the cooling system with new radiators have been carried out. The Targa also was fitted with new engine mounts, new starter motor, rear wiper assembly and new handbrake shoe recently among other works carried out. Overall, this is a great example of a modern classic, well-maintained, and with a terrific transmission thatll keep you smiling whether driving to the office or down some British B-Roads.
