      Description

This lot will be auctioned via Historics Classic and Sportscar Auctioneers at The Pace of Autumn; Ascot Racecourse sale on Saturday 20th September. Low mileage with extensive historyFerraris traditional colour combinationExtensively restored in 2021The Ferrari 308 GTBi is an iconic sports car that represents a significant chapter in Ferraris history. Introduced in 1980, the GTBi was an evolution of the original 308 GTB, which debuted in 1975. Under the bonnet, the 308 GTBi housed a 2.9-litre V8 engine producing around 205 horsepower. Although this was slightly less than the earlier carburetted models, it offered better drivability and fuel efficiency. The V8 was mounted transversely behind the driver, giving the car a mid-engine layout that contributed to its excellent handling and balanced weight distribution. Visually, the 308 GTBi remained true to the striking design penned by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti. It featured a low, aggressive stance, pop-up headlights, and the distinctive wedge-shaped bodywork that made it a symbol of 1980s automotive style. Inside, the cabin was driver-focused, with analoge gauges, leather seats, and a gated five-speed manual transmission that gave it a raw, mechanical feel.Originally registered on 25th September 1981 this Ferrari presents in delightful condition. The all important service history commenced on 23rd October 1981 and by 1986 the car had covered a little over 12,000 miles. In 1994 the recorded mileage stood at 20,694. This 308 GTBi then went into storage for the next 13 years, before undergoing extensive recommissioning work in 2007. The car was used sparingly, although regularly serviced until 2021. The car was purchased by the current vendor in February 2021 whereupon he commenced some extensive restoration work. This included removing the engine, stripping, cleaning and refinishing the tubular chassis. At the same time the suspension was removed, powder-coated and new bushes fitted throughout. New brake discs were fitted, calipers overhauled as was the steering rack & pinion. The often troublesome pop-up headlamps were also overhauled. The nett result of all of this work is a Ferrari 308 GTBi, with only 30,648 miles that can only be described as one of the best we have seen for a long time. Supplied with a V5 registration document and an extensive history folder, this Ferrari will grace any collection. Only 494 units of the GTBi were produced between 1980 and 1983, making it one of the rarer variants of the 308 series. While it may not be the most powerful Ferrari of its time, the 308 GTBi is beloved by enthusiasts for its timeless design, classic Ferrari soundtrack, and analoge driving experience. It also gained pop culture fame through its close relative, the 308 GTS, driven by Tom Selleck in Magnum, P.I. - securing its place as one of Ferraris most recognizable models.
